2 years on and I am still in dispute. The engineers have said that there is a fault and they do not think it can be rectified the sales person said that I should ask for my money back but the management are now saying the steering judder is a characteristic of the E class.

I wrote to Wilfried Steffen's home address in Virginia Water expressing my situation and dissatisfaction with the service received by his team, challenging him on his promise to resolve customer satisfaction issues as reported on Whatcar.com (http://whatcar.com/news-article.aspx?NA=213064). I also enclosed copies of the independent engineers report supporting my claim.

You would think he would have the courtesy to reply. I phoned his office to ask for a reply and spoke to his PA (Lesley), she assured me that she would pass my concern to Mr Steffen and would call me back, but all I got was the customer care team calling me.

It starts at the top and the team operates under his leadership.

It is clear that DC and MB don't care, it's simply "We've got your money, we can't fix it, tough".

If this judder is a characteristic, then ask the dealer to prove it. Ask to drive another off the forecourt. If that doesn't judder then they have some explaining to do. Certainly there is nothing on mine that I would describe as a judder. Some vibration at 60 but I'm pretty sure that's just wheel balance. I'll know better on Monday as a new set of tyres are going on tonight.

My only advice would be to demand to have a meeting with your regional member of their problem resolution team (Steffen's staff I assume) and the dealer. Do this at the dealership so you can compare other cars with your own, the MB guy can actually drive your car and you can discuss a way forward. Be polite but firm. Now you have spoken to Lesley, keep hassling her if necessary!

Hi John,

I agree with JB but offer two further thoughts:

a) Go direct to MBUK in Milton Keynes and demand to see the Customer Services Director

b) Are you in the AA or RAC? then get them or an independant engineer to check the car over. It would be wise to get MBs approval first (they ought to give it) and if the report throws up a fault demand or sue MB for the cost of it.
