Jumping speedo

Oops! Just when I was filling your minds with praise for the Father in law's C200, the Speedo has decided to start dancing around and sometimes will not bother to give any indication of speed. My mind (what's left of it ) points toward a cable. Any one know any reason to think otherwise please?

Only that it is an electronic speedo and is operated by the pulse signal from the abs sensors.
If the speedo does not work at times then the needle flicks up to the correct speed it is because the needle is sticking to the stop pin, a common problem with the c- class.

The only thing that I have is, speedometer erroneous =speed signal in the cluster. Hope it make more sense to you than me.

Thanks Malcolm! reading it sounds like conformation of what C220GJS (geo?) said. If I get chance next week to strip it, I'll give it a go.
