hi guys,

i've been using this forum for a year or so and i must say i've learned a lot of valuable information about my car (and I DO appreciate that very much).

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those people on this forum (and all the others that chimed in with info) for their very kind attitude towards 'replying and giving info to threads no matter what they were'

In particular those people (to me at least) are

>>>>>>>> 'television' and 'jberks' <<<<<<<<<<<<

both of you guys rock !!!!

it is people like you who make forums great, and I conclude that this forum is great

thanks again :)

Just had a thought on your doors, why not have 2 new door skins, uk price £40 so about 500sec, easy to fit, make them like new.

ah i dunno about that, i brought the car down to mercedes on friday, they took photos of all the rust, then proceeded to fill out a form, take paint thickness measurements and i have to call back on 26th of may for a result

most likely they'll tell me to get lost as its a 1995 merc and i dont think thats covered under their current rust plan

if thats the case, i'll see what they charge for new doors if its way expensive i'll check a indie painter, get him to touch up the rust, and then sell the car and get another newer (not new) merc

if only i could win the lotto :)

two chances of that though :(

cheers

Don't forget, Door skins are a cheap option, it means you keep the door frames, and new panels are fitted, it does not take long to do.

Well now anyweb! I agree with your comments as above. This forum is one of the best I've visited. Everyone tries to help others.
Door Skins are the outer part of your doors. If you open a door on your car, you can see the edge where the outer and inner meet. If you run your fingers from the outside around the door edge and continue inside for about 10 - 20mm you can feel and see a sealant that is painted the same colour as the door. Continue running your fingers toward the inside and the smooth metal surface can be felt. This line of sealant is where the outer Skin and the main door frame are joined. Basically two pieces of metal, both pressed into shape and then joined together by folding the edges together, spot welding then sealing before going for further assembly, paint whatever.
Sorry I cannot show you a photo ( I tried with my camera phone, but at this time of night with no flash you cannot see a thing) as my digital has packed in and I have yet to replace it.
If some kind soul can photograph the inner edge and display it please, you will be able to see the sealant where the lip is folded.
I hope that helped and made sense!
I need sleep now so I'll check the thread some time later.

Thanks Malcolm!
Photo's are better than any written explanation.
This is hard sometimes, I do not want to tread on anyones toes, I do not want to apear to clever, I searched the web this morning for a picture of a door skin and only found 1 with a picture, but I felt rotten in the process of putting it up.

This forum is made up of a lot of very nice people, all chipping in with that vital piece of info. Answering problems by remote control is not easy, How do you answer "ive got a tapping noise in the engine" could be a valve lifter, little end or something loose, often the model of the car is the biggest clue, then someone who has been there, and done it comes along with the answer, and that is worth the most, sadly as time goes on with new models and more electronics waiting around the corner, DIY will become a thing of the past. OK we will always have brakes and suspension and the like with the odd water pump, cooling, etc.

In the first place, like a shop without any customers this forums could not exist without the love for MB cars and the problems that go hand in hand with that. I like it very much when someone has asked a question about a problem with their car, and when they have fixed it, they then help the next person with the same problem, add the fact that we have so many specialist on certain model like 124's and Bolide. I did not want to mention names for the fear of leaving someone out.

Though I have only been active since Nov 05 I have seen the forum grow, and we get more people from all over the world joining in, I always try and give some kind of answer to someone with a first posting as I feel that they will then come back again, all of us learning more about our cars in the process. When threads have had no answer after two days and some answer has been given, I have seen the threads take off to end up being very good and interesting.

Though this is a cyber world, I have made a lot of friends and gained a lot of knowledge, and say thank you, to any answer, to anything. One of the snags of being self employed is that you can take off on a fault in completely the wrong direction, then someone puts up an answer on a different line of thought, and the answer falls into place. If just one example is taken, say Philharve and his car being unstable at speed, he has given the answer himself. I said no, it cant be shock's, but then he let some air out of the tyres, and the car was better, I then realized after reading this months trade press that it is the wheels bouncing and it will be the shock's

You are all great people, making a great forum, and thank you again.

Malcolm
