Hi 1st post, I have just bought (yesturday) a 2 owner 1990 300se, its v nice and drives perfect but all four windows do not work nor do the wipers or washers or sunroof!! It kind of ruins the car! Because all these things do not work I think it may be something related and hopefully something simple. I have checked the fuses and they are fine.

Any ideas would be great. The car cost £400 so I do not want to spend much! thanks!!

The faults that you have do not add up to being one thing, the wipers are controlled by a relay N10 but the windows are not, there must be a wire off or fuse holder not making contact. If you got a cheap voltmeter it would be a start.

Go to the site find your car with the VIN number, then electrics,in left hand row. at the bottom you will see fuse and relay units.

I know you said your fuses are fine ,but the type of fuses on your car are prone to corrosion and losing contact with the holders. Take out each fuse and clean the end caps and also the holder with contact cleaner and/or wire wool, this can cure a lot of problems on these cars.

thanks v much for the info, I will try it. I have decided to cut my losses and sell. However today all the windows did work...but only when one of the doors were opened!! Is this why these cars are so cheap!? Have a look at my ad on pistonheads.com

electrical faults (broken wires) tend to manifest themselves at the point of most action, so if you think about a door, the hinge is where the most action is and its at the hinge of the door that the wires are running through a wire conduit (behind a black rubber thingy)

I've had problems in the past where the wires behind there had over time, cracked, got wet, rusted and then broke leading to no contact and no electrics for whatever function they were supposed to be doing

it could be the case that when your door was open, it was allowing a faulty wire to 'make contact' and thus the windows worked, and likewise when the door was closed, the wire was separated and therefore the windows didn't work

or I could be totally wrong :)

cheers
