now on my way home from work i noticed my rear driverside disc is grinding but im unsure whether its the pad or the handbrake shoe??

this is the first time i change dthe rear disc and pads and brake shoes since i have owned the car.

there is no sound from the front disc or pads,

You will have to remove the wheel to see what is wrong, it could be the parking brake

Did you clean everything before reassembly, sounds like some rusty stuff on the brake drum or the lip on the disk grooving the pads.

Thank you all for the replies.

I will check the parking brake i have a feeling it needs to be adjusted as it was set for the worn out shoes. (Just something i forgot to do but set out to do)

I cleaned all the rusty bits off with a wire brush and de greased the disc before assembly but i will still check incase there is any bits between the pads and disc.

thank you again for your help.

It is probably the rusty lip on the new pads, but is it making the noise all the time, or just when braking ? And if all the time, is the wheel getting warm/hot to the touch ? If yes, you may have possibly a jammed or sticking caliper,

It happens on the hand brake. The retaining spring is not seated correctly and is catching the drum of the rear disk. I have seen a few of these, even done it myself.

You hit the nail right on the head here i checked it and thats exactly wat it was, those springs are a nightmare to get in especially if you havent got the right tools and are using a screwdriver instead :|

Thanks for all the input guys, Much Appreciated.

One should always back the parking brake right off, through the hole in the drum, rather than trying to get the drum over the wear ridge. Once the shoes are off center it makes it much harder to get them centralised again.
