Ok, now I'm really on a major downer. Can anyone estimate the time required to change the head gasket on my 320sl :(

I'd estimate about 5 hours work.

If you get it done at an independent specialist, prices vary between £700 -£1000 depending on location.

Depending on mileage, whilst you have the head off, you may as well put in new guides and seals and re-lap the valves etc.

Don't get discouraged, its a pain when they go but not uncommon around the 100k mark.

Thanks for the info, it's good to know I'm not the only one to suffer.

Hi

The approx time for removing & refiting a cylinder head on a 320 will be 9.5hrs.

Yes it common. Unless its done mega miles I an not so sure I would have the valve out.

If the head gasket is leaking water in a big way & coming out the exhaust. I would have the valves reseated.

Hopes this helps
