As above, the screw was right in the middle of the tyre, it looks like the kind of screw that holds a plug socket on the wall, quite blunt. tyre is a 255x45x18 can I get it fixed or is it a new tyre??????

nice 201 2.5D 1993 & very nice 129 SL500 1994
The repaired tyre will not be as stong as an undamaged one, refit it on the rear since a blowout is nicer on a rear tyre. if the tyre has any apreciable wear replacement is the best bet.

I've marvelled at the fantastic knowledge of you guys on this site, Parrot, Television, Black, Jberks, the man in the mountains of Spain, D Pemb (Glow Man).Thank you all. Perhaps I can repay you in some small way now. A plug is a plug, an electrical socket is an electrical socket, different things. The screw will be an M3.5 chromed socket screw if its what you think it is. There now, I feel more "in the team" after that.
Seriously guys you are all superb and perhaps I can speak for all the juniors who have mechanical knowledge but not the Merc expertise, all your help and advice is much appreciated.
David.

If you do put it on the rear I would put the other front tyre on the rear as well.;)

Think I will go the safe route and just replace both rear tyres, dont like the idea of a 2 ton car at 100mph running a fixed tyre. the rears look a little ready for replacement anyway.

good move I think - tyres are in my view 50 % rubber and 50% in the head - if you're not happy with the thought of a repaired tyre it will niggle away endlessly - If they're getting to the point where replacement would be soonish then go for it

Best bet by far.
Have just replaced 2 front tyres due to a "N0 8 40mm wood screw twin threaded brass plated;-) " through the tread but like you felt easier replacing rather than repairing.
An expensive buisness but I can replace money.
