I have a e220 2.2 1995 auto...petrol

I have been told that the towing weight is 1910kg can anyone tell me if this is right as i am about to buy a new caravan and don't want to buy one to big...

the caravan that i like has a mass of 1510kg so if it is 1910kg for the car it should be ok....

Your Mercedes
BMW 525 Diesel Touring
E220 estate (figures for the saloon may differ):
* vehicle weight 1480 Kg
* gross vehicle weight 2130 Kg
* gradeability (auto) with 2100 Kg trailer load, 22%

The Caravan Club recommends towing no more than 85% of the kerb weight. Kerb weight is vehicle weight + weight of full tank of fuel + 75 Kg for (a very light) driver & luggage. Diesel is about 0.85 Kg / litre and a W124 holds about 70 litres so the fuel weighs 60 Kg. That gives a kerb weight of 1615 Kg and a maximum recommended 85% trailer weight of 1375 Kg

Your caravan starts at 93%. Once you load it (I assume the weight given is dry) you'd be well on your way to 100%. If you loaded it with 150 Kg you'd be at 103% and the combined weight of the rig would be 3.2 Tons without taking passengers and a reasonable amount of luggage into consideration...

In my experience with an E300 Diesel estate I'd say 1500 Kg is near the outer limit of what's useable & safe and, more than likely, your loaded caravan would be 1660 Kg or more

So, despite Mercedes saying it'll tow 2100 Kg, I think a 1510 Kg caravan is too big for a 220. But a test-drive will tell you everything you need to know

Dear deadred

I have a 1999 e300 td and I tow a swift challenger which has an all up weight of 1560kg. It tows perfectly and is the most stable tow car I have ever had.
If yours is an automatic though I would recomend you have an extra gearbox oil filter fitted.
Kenlowe do a very good one
