key and handbook help please

I have only just joined this so apologies if this has been asked before. I have just got a 97 300TD Auto estate as a p/ex clearance off a non MB dealer, it's fine and I like it but I only got one key (& remote)- is there anywhere I can get a spare from or do I have to get one off a main dealer and pay their prices? Also, although it has a fully stamped main dealer history book there were no handbooks with it (I want to know what all the switches do, technical info etc), are these available anywhere apart from a main dealer or searching on ebay?

I have been down this road regarding the keys and have looked at 2nd hand keys from ebay with the possibility of reprogramming and it does not seem to work. It seems the only option is a new key from a dealer at approx £140. Your best bet for a handbook is ebay and while you wait for a original at the right price you can buy a disc with all the info on it to get you started.

The Handbook is available from MB around £18, its worth having, same goes for the key.

Whatever you do don't be tempted to buy a second hand key, they just cannot be reprogrammed.

The handbooks do come up on E Bay quite frequently, but is it worth waiting? As Malcolm says, about £18 from the dealer, and you have it within a week. By the time you pay postage etc the second hand ones on E Bay don't really come out much cheaper.

perhaps you can tell us what kind or remote you have, and key.

is it a seperate remote and seperate key.

is it the flip key, in the remote.

also try and find the details of the last owner may be on the V5, or even ask the dealer.
write to the last owner and ask him if he has the manuals, log book , keys etc lying about.

if no look there, go to the dealer, or try ebay, the manuals arent too dear and there is always loads on ebay, problem with ebay is that there is are alot of prints for each manual for each model of car, so with ebay you may not obtain an up to date manual.

Keys are only available from dealer, programmed and ready for use, you will also need proof of ownership.

The wallets and manuals do come up on ebay but you could try a more direct approach by contacting Dronsfield or one of the other MB specialist dismantlers.

Thanks for all your help, looks like Jacksons MB near me can do the key for £141 groan......
Haven't got the handbooks yet - one specialist had them for £27 + vat so I'll keep watching ebay unless someone out there has them - Jon?

I phoned merc ireland for a manual and they sent one in the post which arrived next day, Free Gratis (very nice of them). They key with all the security checks, almost a DNA test I got from a stealer, took hours for the feckin thing to swap stories with the car before it would start.
