I recently installed a remote central locking kit on my W124, and it's working excellently.

The kit came with two key blades in the same shape as the original W124 keys, which can be cut to match the original keys and then inserted into the remote for an OEM look.

I took my keys and the blades into Timpsons and asked if they could copy my key onto the blade, and the assistant told me I would have to go to the main dealer for that.

Am I being conned here? The W124 key does not have any electrics in it, it's just a basic key so surely they could copy it, since that's what they do right?

Even at a dealer you would have to prove that you owned the vehicle, normally by showing V5 etc.
Similar to getting new number plates.

Nope , many shoe repair type places still cut car keys .

Problem is , modern car keys , like those for the W124 have the profile cut into the flat sides of the blade and not just along one edge like older car keys and the likes of domestic 'Yale' type keys .

Most shoe repair places just don't have the equipment to cut modern car keys , that's all there is to it . ( I'm sure they had a board full of blanks on the wall behind the counter ) .

I certainly had a 123 key cut at a key place and the 124 key was no different I believe. Its just a case of finding someone with the right kit. That said, you may find that a dealer isn't that expensive for a proper new one.

M.B. will charge about £20.00 for your key, I am lucky where i live, 5mins away they would charge £9.00, and £15.00 when i had my sl keys copied took 5mins.

I don't really want a whole key though; I just want my key copied onto the blade that I already have. It's the only way that it can be attached to the new remote.

Yes if you find the right key cutting service, that has the equipment not where they repair shoes ect, they can do it.

Can I ask where you sourced your remote locking kit? I was going to get a cheapy from eBay, but if I could get a proper one with the flip key attached, that would be much better.
Thanks.

Was it easy to connect to the pneumatic locking? Thanks.

Yes, you don't have to do anything with the pneumatic system. You just tap into the green control wire going to the pump and get a permanent +/-12v feed from the pump's power wire.

It's explained pretty well in the link posted above, but the kit comes with some car-specific instructions that are also helpful.

Went into Timpsons this morning and ordered 2 x keys for my W124 230ce. They said they have to order the blanks but they'll be in mid week. £8 each. Cheap as chips.

Proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say so I'll update next week

The real reason is ebay keys are generally too tough to cut cleanly. The cutting blades will flex and not get a good copy. They also blunt the cutter and on one occasion the cutter snapped.
So it's easier to tell a white lie that a main dealer should do it rather than "you've bought a load of old ****e there mate, get lost!

Got my new keys as ordered and got a bit of a bonus as they only charged me £10 for the pair. Good old Timpsons Truro.
