I have a 1997 E320, today I drove into town, parked the car and went shopping. Upon my return the fob wouldnt lock or unlock the car. (fortunately I had left it unlocked) The key wouldn't turn in the Ignition or remove the steering lock. The remote hadn't been working from as far away for a while and I figured the batteries were flat, I was parked outside maplins so I dismantled the fob, bought two batteries and fitted them - still nothing. I walked home and retrieved the spare key fob which worked fine. Is the fob broken? or does it need some procedure performing to make it work again. It's a three button fob with the metal key in a slot down the side, the LED blinks when I press the button but nothing happens.

Help me.....!

I don't want to pay a main dealer if I can help it.

Regards

As Blobcats thread I too have read this, the only thing against it is this is one of the reasons why it fails, as indicated in WIS. could anyone who has cured the problem by leaving the key in come forward please.

Why doesn't it turn in the ignition? this part of it is 100% mechanical and shouldn't be effected whatever the state/condition of the remote part of the key. Are you sure the wheels aren't hard against the kerb and in doing so, can make the steering lock very tight. Try wiggling the wheel and see if the key will turn. It's a bit odd that the lock or key blade has faulted at the same time as the remote.

With the IR keys the ignition will not turn until the key is recognised. You can hear the click once it releases.

See my reply to similar question Re: reprogramming the key, basicly point key at car press button on key fob put key into steering lock and turn to position 2 within 20 seconds. At least that is whatit say's in my handbook S320 1997. worth a try?

A strange system this IES switch, the key must have lost its memory or it has become contaminated, sinse no power can flow until the key is turned, this was my reason for asking if anyone has left the key in.
I must put up the photo's of Malcolm 210 switch.

It does not matter, as we are the only ones (almost) that know the difference

These keys can have the batteries removed no problem, they cannot be reprogrammed by the dealer. Mine was kaput, good batteries, led flashed but no action. Main dealer price £147.00 ouch!
