Evening all,

Ok, i have a 1995 W124 E320 with infra red central locking. The one with the little red n green squares on the door handle and boot. Now i'm pretty sure the fob is kaputt as new batteries did'nt get it working.
Mercedes quoted me £117+VAT .... which me thinks is a tad dear.. :(
Is there anyway round this? or do i have to succum to the main man's monopoly. . . . .

By pointing the end into a digital camera you can see if it is working, though even if it is the codes may be wrong.

..... It's dead alright :D

Quite ingenious method me thinks ;) ta

Is it still a main dealer replacement ?

Could i get a basic alarm fitted to fire the central locking ?

Is THIS what it's like owning an old Merc...... ? ( keeps me off the streets suppose )

Cheers pal

If it makes you feel better Volvo take £200, no choice but the main dealer.

I tried washing mine at 60c, it failed

have you tried to resynch it to the car?

Funny thing, i was looking under the car for rust with the key in my back pocket and the doors started opening and closing :D little green light on the door handle blinking away. . . . . so i shot up and tried the fob and EUREKA!!
.... nowt. :(
I can get an alarm fitted for £120 that operates the central locking....and lowers my insurance :) happy days. . .

Pull the fob apart. Check for any dodgy solder joints on the PCB. Also check you've got the battery in the right way around.

It could be something as stupidly daft as a failed IR diode (although its rare for them to fail).

On remotes, the biggest cause of failure is dry joints in the IR diode or on the tac switches.

Some are hard to open and care must be take with the RF aerial .

I use an old bone handle kitchen knife, and re glue with plumbers pipe solvent (with care)

Surely the car will already have an alarm fitted, unless someone has disposed of it.

My Laserline alarm integrates with the same keyfob you have.

Do the lights and winkers flash when you centrally lock/unlock your doors ????

Are there no sensors on the A pillars ????

If it was sealed, it can be unsealed :)

If its glued together, find the join, stick it in a vice (with rags to protect the plastic), and cut down the join.

Lets face it, if you don't do this you're going to have to bin it anyway. Whats there to lose? If you fix it, glue it back together, bit of fine wet&dry paper on the join, nobody would ever know.

No, the car only has the original security (whatever it is) fitted. The lights on the drivers door handle did flash briefly which caused a momentary euphoria on the drive, then reverted to gloom when i didn't lock.. .. .. No i don't have any sensors on the A pillars, your's will be for the third party alarm i guess. As for cutting it in half ........... i'll give it a miss me thinks.

Cheers.

Hi,
Try New fob batteries, disconnect/reconnect car battery (for approx. 5mins) and then resynch fob to the car.

Sorry to ask but how are you starting the car at all then? Do you mean the fob doesn't switch off the imobiliser? if so then I would recommend you change the battery in the fob as sometimes the battery has enough juice to send the message to undo the locks but not disarm the imobiliser. I found this out on my previous 129 when it was in for a the rear window soft top caused a bit of head scratching and a lot of relief when it only cost £6 to fix the problem.. :)
