Hi all new here :)

I have been offered an slk 230 1997 by an elderly friend however there is a catch
He’s lost the keys and log book and it’s been sat for around 3 years where would I be able to obtain a key? He can’t remember if it was flip out type or just a key any help would be great :)

Hello and welcome

Firstly they’re going to have to prove ownership… a V5 doesn’t do that but it is a start. Have them apply for a new V5, once they receive that they can transfer the car to you.
When you have a V5 you can get some keys made, Mercedes can get keys made, although I’m not sure if they can make those anymore.
”replacement Mercedes keys” a forum supporter might be your best bet

I'm never convinced of these "sorry I've lost the V5 and keys stories" from a seller. Surely your friend could do a search of his house to find at least the keys? Unless there is some sentimental issue involved, I wouldn't be touching it personally. Nothing insurmountable, but I can foresee more hassle than it's worth.

TBH, it's not as if it's an expensive car. I would be more sceptical with something with some value of it being a way to bypass getting some keys made.

I see it the other way round, a cheap car not being worth the hassle. I guess though that being a friend selling it makes a difference, and there's nothing there that can't be resolved, as long as there are no major mechanical issues, from standing etc. Tell us how you get on.
