I thought it was the batteries in the keyfob and went and changed them straight away it made no difference, so I thought the key had gone down I took it to mercedes and they said it apears to be working as the infred shows on a camera but it is possable that the radio side of the key is not working is there any way of testing or reprogramming the key. PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP

Anyone have any ideas how I can make a positive decision on what it is other wise I am going to end up paying a small fortune and it could be just a key or I buy a key and its the EIS system which means I buy a key and then have that done and have to buy another key as the old keys are slightly larger.

A bit of a dilema really I would make sure that the battery is fully charged, hook up another good battery and a set of jump leads and let your battery charge for about ten minutes before trying the key again, also make sure all ancillary items are unplugged, mobile phones, dvd players etc ..ie anything that is plugged in to the cigarette lighter sockets. then clean the key and the switch itself and retry your key.

I have done that makes no difference I am wondering if I purchase a key from the dealer if I have to have the new EIS system fitted can they use the same key or will I end up paying for another key.

They should code the new EIS for your car. It's a lot more than just the key fob! A lot of the cars "programe" is held in the EIS

Is there any way I can tell if its defenatly the EIS or the key it seems funny it was all ok no warnings or anything although I have took the key apart so many times now its falling apart, the problem is that the new ignitions wont except the old key so if I sent of for a key what type would I get?

I would think that as you could unlock the car but not start it it would be the EIS.Assuming you have remote central locking

yeah but have you re-synced the key to the car ? if not the immobiliser will kick in and you cannot start the car with the key in if the immobiliser is enabled

the re-synching sequence is here at the bottom of the page

You say that your key is not the same as this

Yes my key is the same as the one in the picture the plastic type with infrered.
what I was trying to say was that if I purchase a new key then it will be the same as the old key what I have now but the EIS system uses a smaller key aparently.
which inturn means I could buy a key and if it does'nt work then I have to purchase a EIS plus another key

key fault

Hi
sounds like a key fault 203's very common for this although EIS not uncommon. from your comments i assume you have no spare key. You need a spare so order a key remote this is smaller than the current key but will work in old and new EIS the manual blade will not fit so you will need a new blade. the remote should be avialable next day but blade will take 7-10 working days

HI thanks for your advise mercedes said it will take 4 working days to get the key back and are requesting that I have to take the car to collect the key, how silly I cant move thecar so how do you over come that one?
we are talking about the plastic key with the infrered on the end not that I am very technical about these things I love the car although I have only managed to drive it for three days before what ever it was went wrong.

Its hard getting my head around this one,, and I feel that it is an alarm immobilizer fault rather than the key

You could slide the inside of the key out and see if the little coil has fallen off as in the DIY section
