KEYFOB wont turn in ignition!

My friend has a 2000 E CLASS KOMPRESSOR.

The key he uses all the time works fine.The spare key opens the doors ok but when he puts it in the ignition it won't turn !

Any ideas folks

Has your friend ever successfuly used this "spare key" in the past? If not it sounds like it may not be the right key for the car as the DAS system is not recognising it as a viable key

Just realised its the spare key that is not working, it will be the DAS part of that key that has failed, it will need a new one at £150

Yep - same happened to me. Luckily I'd just got the car from a dealer (non-merc) so they forked out the £135 without quibbling (knowing how much they cost I had explicity asked if the car had two keys before purchase).

Turned out the second key had actually been blocked on the DAS unit - looks like a previous own may have lost it at some point and had the key blocked - then it turned up again.
