Hi All

Probably a stupid girlie question but thought I'd ask anyway. I have just had a new imobiliser fitted on my SLK 230. From what I remember from the guy at the garage I had to give him copies of log book and ID so that he could get a new ignition key. Thing is have now got car back, hip hip horray, its only taken about 6 weeks to find the fault and replace the parts, but that's another story!!!!

My query is, I now only have one key, my spare key, that I had originally doesn't work. Does it need to be "sinced", not sure if thats the right word, to the new imobilised or do I have to buy another key from somewhere or am I stuffed with only one key?

Any advice?

not sure what you've had replaced so struggling a bit. You shouldn't normally need a new key with a repair to the car as any new components should be coded for your existing key - so why did you need a new key?

What type of key do you have? Is it a solid plastic key shaped block that plugs in or the one with the metal flick out key and a single button?

Hi

Maybe I'm being totally thick. I'm waiting for the garage to call me back to confirm what they've actually fitted. Long story, basically I bought car, it broke down, garage sorted it (at their cost), car now returned yesterday. Maybe I don't have a new key, I'm sure the guy said the immobiliser was in but he just need to order a new key. I thought that was why they needed to see a copy of my log book and ID to verify that I was actually the owner of the vehicle. The key is the one that flicks out.

Why else would garage need to see log book and id when getting new part?

Grateful if you could enlighten me, am intreged why they needed ID now.

Don't worry - and I'm sure you're not thick! You bought a merc after all :)

Merc changed all their locking systems a few years ago so I was trying to get a picture of what you have. Yours is the earlier system. What I don't get is why they had to replace the key, unless it is impossible to code an existing key to a new immobiliser - which may well be the case. If so, and I can't see why the garage would spend £100 on a new key if they didn't need to, your existing spare key is now a nice paperweight - so you may want to pressure them into replacing that too.
There are more knowledgable folk on this subject so I'll wait for their comments.

As per the ID, the garage is right. You can only get keys from an MB dealership, and they won't entertain an order without the log book, proof of ID and a DNA sample ;-)

Thanks for that info - my SLK is a V Reg. Is that really how much a new key costs "£100"?

The keys cost £200 and if a garage replaces anything, like the EIS lock,it comes ready to use with your existing keys

True Malcolm, but this one is the flick key - so pre EIS. I know a new barrel isn't a problem because I had one on my 202 and MB matched it to my existing keys but I'm not so sure with an immmobiliser. After all, you can't code used keys to an existing locking system so I wonder whether a new locking system would need new matched remotes. Any idea what the crack is with a new immobiliser on these - oh WIS wizard :)

Something does not add up, and yours answers are correct all the way through.

We have never had and immobilizer replace thread, as most faults on these is related to the rear pump, with a kind of SAM built in.

The new one should be OK for the existing keys if ordered correctly.
I will take a look see what I can find on this

This is a DAS system, where the radio controlled module would have been changed, the transponder is the part the recognizes the key,

It is stated thus.

When replacing the control module, or remote control key, always specify the lock number, and chassis number, because the two parts are matched, its then all coded on the car when fitted so that it all is matched and works

Hi,
I think some confusion over the style key the O/P has, it may be a flick out key blade type that we have come top associate with pre 97 E & C class vehicles equipped with numerous standards of Scorpion alarms, but i believe the SLK stayed with this style key but with 2+ buttons and a MB "factory" fitted security system

All 170's have a DAS system, slightlty different dependent on the country, and use a transponder for the key recognition, it is not the style of key it how it is used, they 170 as of 01-0-97 uses the above type.

To synchronize the Key press any button twice and insert into ign and turn to 2 within 30 seconds
