Just recently had my car serviced and when it came back, I'd had the accelerator cable adjusted. previously when engaging kickdown, the car would usually drop two gears and would take off, was a bit clunky when the next gear came in. Indie adjusted it so that its just drops one gear and now its much much smoother.

Question is, he said that a car my age should be on the softer setting (one gear drop). I preferred the old setting but dont want knacker the "box.

who's right ?

I have only ever known one gear drop, the normal start was 2nd and you could kick it into 1st. You only have 4 gears and 3rd gear starts have not been used I believe since the 60s. If I am wrong someone will soon tell you.

I accidentally squeezed too hard

in 4th at 70 and suddenly got 70 and rising like a banshee in 2nd (then 80, then I chickened out) It does seem to chhose the most appropriate cog for dynamic action.I don't think the brain will send you into first at 90, but it will pop you into 3d.

As far as I am aware it should kickdown to whatever gear is within its rev range. When I first had my SL I thought the kickdown was marvellous - but it only dropped one gear but with so much torque it still took off. Then one day I was cleaning the carpets in the footwell and noticed that half my kickdown switch was missing......Changed the switch and now it drops 2 gears if appropriate eg at 75 in 4th it will kickdown to 2nd for the last 7mph before changing up to 3rd - actually that can be a bit annoying!

Sorry I though he was refering to starts in 1 or 2, of cause it should kick down more than 1. I can kick my volvo from 4 to 1 the wheels spin but that's another story
