km/h readout on dash of recent UK cars (eg B-class) - can it be disabled?

I was riding in my parent's new B-class, but knowing MB this will be the same in other models too: where everyone else can choose between showing outside temp or km/h, the UK-spec cars are fixed to displaying km/h (a legal requirement).

I'm assuming that without reprogramming the dash there is no way of overriding this, so that the (more useful) outside temp can be displayed?

Sorry you are required by law to display both when the speedometer does not have km on the scale.

On the C class, true you must have km/h on the bottom (status) display - so you cannot select outside temp as an option. But it is possible to show outside air temperature on the upper display, so it is not too great a hassle.

I would have preferred if they'd put the km on the inside of the speedo though, just like almost everyone else.

Me too. They give you an analogue clock because they're easier to read - the same applies to kph scales round the speedo dial as opposed to numbers on the LCD display.

This can be done but you need a STAR machine (or access to one;) ) to get it altered. I've seen it changed to temperature display instead and/or MPH.

The neat mod though is to have the tyre light (in the shape of a tyre) come on when the tyre pressure sensor kicks in!

Sorry mate it cant be done using the star, MB have locked the ecu for uk cars to stop it being done. To unlock it you need a code from the boys and they wont give it out, I've tried. Not seen the tyre symbol one either.

Time for John the Ripper to get the code then

Any way be careful since those vehicles have many different firmware versions (even in the same model) so some things are available in one car but not in the same one of just a couple months older / younger. They are computers and running on software.

Great if he can, I should have said it only applies to newish vehicles, most of the options are built in and and just need activate them in the menu using star, a good example is fog light comes on when cornering at low speed.
