there is a knocking / thumping noise that appears to be coming from the front right hand side of my dads 98 E300 DT, the drop links from the ARB have been changed but the noise is still there, the car has been jacked and prodded and poked but there is nothing obviously wrong with it, any ideas??

The only other main wearing item is the bottom ball joint, unless the wheel bearing was very loose.

As above, bottom ball joints. It could also be the ARB bushes. You can disconnect the ARB at the links & see if the noise goes ( don't drive it like you stole it though ) & dont forget to re connect them afterwards. If the noise is still there with ARB disconnected, it's pointing towards bottom ball joints.

ok, we seem to have discovered the knokcing noise, it appears to be coming from the steering column somewhere if not the rack its self, is this something a competent DIY mechanic can tackle, or are we talking specialist / dealers here?

Hi

If your talking about the inner ball joint on the steering rack they are pretty easy to change. Remove track rod end, undo gaiter over inner balljoint, slide gaiter back. Using 2 big spanners seperate Balljoint from rack, then replace all.
