I have a 1992 300SL- 68,000 miles
The rear offside rear wheel has a knocking noise, particularly running over rough roads.
I have lifted the rear wheel and with the weight off I banged the wheel. I was able to recreate the noise. There is a metal shield behind the wheel which is presumably there to prevent gunge and dirt getting in. It seems that this may be hitting the inside of the wheel on rough terrain. Is this possible? Is it likely to be slightly loose?
A local mechanic tried moving it back a touch by hitting it with a rubber hammer-that has reduced the frequency but I am not too keen on thumping things for the sake if it!
any ideas?
