I just had my front break pads replaced at Kwik fit rather than going back to the dealer. However, the electronic sensor warning about worn brake pads is still on after the replacement. Kwik Fit said the sensors should reset itself in due course, is this true??

My MB is a 2003 C200.

Don't know for certain but I really doubt it. If it resets itself it will do it within 30 seconds or so. If it's taken any longer I suspect it won't reset without intervention, or they haven't refitted the sensors properly.

Kwik fit brake fitters know as much about brakes as i know about flying the space shuttle,,,they go fo one days training, and are allowed five attempts at fitting the rear shoes on a metro hub...i wouldent let them sit as a passenger in my car,far less work on it.....

Never let tyre depot monkeys loose on your car. I foolishly allowed Kwik Fit to replace the shocks on a Cavalier once, and they managed to assemble the front struts in the wrong order, with the bolts only hand tight. I took it back... and it came back the same! I actually had to watch them do it before it was done correctly.

I wouldn't even take it back to complain about the warning light, they'll probably only chop the wire or remove the bulb!

In the hand book it tells you how to reset dash warning lights . i'm sure the answer is to Turn the steering wheel full left lock then full right and full left again.
Good Luck and let us know how you get on ;-)

I though that procedure resets the ESP, when the wheel position sensor gets out of sync (done it a couple of times on the E) I doubt it will do much for the brake pad warning light though.

I think your bulb is safe, there's no way they'll have a clue how to do that!
The wire though .....

I let kwikifit do a puncture repair once - thats about as far as I'd let them go, and even then I stand and watch.

I thought that one wear sensors have been triggered they should be replaced. If not they can be reused. They are only something like £6 a pair.

I assume the mechanism has changed. In the old days (W123 etc) the sensor was just a metal pin inserted into the pad. When the pad wore through and the sensor came into contact with the disk, it made a circuit and put the light on. But the downside was that the light only stayed on whilst the two were touching and for the first few occasions it was intermittent. Clearly the sensor wore at as it rubbed against the disc which is why you normally replaced them. Perhaps now its all computerised, the computer 'latches' on once it recieves an initial signal, to avoid the intermittent warning and it has to be reset by plugging in a startac machine, rather like the SRS warnings.

My last set were replaced fractionally before hitting the sensor so I've no experience of how the warning works on the computer warning system.

I wore my ML pads down to their absolute limit before replacing them (got my monies worth!!) hence the warning light remained on during this time, however, the light immediately extinguished itself when i renewed the pads and sensors.

I would check to see if they have fitted new sensor wires,,,aftermarket pads dont come with them, you need to buy them separate...worth a look.......but the light should go out as soon as the new sensor wires are fitted......the sensor wires work as a loop, when the disc wears through the sensor the wire separates and activates the light......

Nicky.....

Brake warning light sensors

Unlike the old sensors on various makes and models of cars that made an earth conection when worn down, The Merc sensors are actually a loop so when the pad wears it breaks the loop and cotact is lost which brings on the light,So disconnecting the wire is not an option the sensor cable has to be renewed to complete the circuit.

Dont know about ALL other Mercs but i can state with certainty that on my ML the worn pads warning light system works on the aforementioned 'earth' system... ie.. the light will come on when the sensor wire is earthed to the disc (and will go off on open circuit).

My 190 Is the same. Put the wire to earth and the light comes on
