Hi All,

As you can all see I took out and replaced my cigarete lighter fuse, on doing this I also checked some of the other fuses in the rear fuse box unit, I noticed that there was a cable connector connector which is not connected to anything, I later noticed that this was for the boot light which for some reason was not connected, I connected this and didnt spot anything odd.

Later in the night, I was driving and was geting some L Brake light Check Lamp warning light on the screen, then as I drove on, it changed to L and R, so both lights are not working. I got home and parked the car and empied the contents of the boot, I then told someone to check for me if my lights are working, and
she said they were both coming on, the car go switched off for a about 15 mins, I then had to drive elsewhere and now none of the lights are coming on.

I also forgot to say, the boot light which is what I connected a cable to has a bulb which was actually damaged, I didnt notice this before, but the above are the only changes that I have made and now none of the brake lights work. I have disconnected the boot light and my brake lights still dont work.

Before I also forget to mention, one of the brake light bulbs was from Halfords just about 1 month ago.

Thanks in advance..

Do the bulbs light or not? You say someone checked them and they were working but you then say the warning came on again. The warning isn't foolproof so you need to be sure whether the warning is the problem. The warning checks the resistance on the bulbs. Corrosion/oxidisation on the contacts and poor connections can cause the warning to trip whilst technically the bulbs are still working. The bulbs will actually be dim but you won't be able to tell until you clean one up.

This could also be a SAM problem, I will try and look later in the day

Hi All,

I bought new brake light bulbs and that seem to have solved the problem, its just that sometimes, even with the bulb in, the check lamp error still came on atimes but when I asked someone to check for me, they said the lights are working. I have since left it, no warning after restarting the car. I hope this is the end of it, I have searched the forums and some people seem to be talking about a contact cleaner for cleaning the bulb holder to allow for good contact, can anyone comment on this.

Never use sand paper on the bulbs or holders,,they only have a flash nickel coating.

Maplins sell a non drying cleaner that stops arcing and that should sole the problems.

Interesting with the brake lamp fault showing up,,it only displays it if the brake pedal has been pressed, thats if there is a fault

You solved your own problem just forget it. After you started your car self-tests are undergoing.

This is what the check lamp for. If any of the bulbs malfunction(ie burnt out) it light up to warn you. When you brake at a level don't leave the brake paddle on too long, it heats up very quickly because Merc use a higher wattage than other makes of car, I presume for higher illuminate. Very common to have brake light bulb burnt off.

Ok guys

I have an update, after I thought everything was over on sunday, I took the car out yesterday and after driving for about 5 mins, I had an error saying that my L lamp is not working, I parked the car and asked someone to check my brake light after depressing it and they reported back to me saying that it came on, i.e both of them.

After restarting the car, then the error goes away then comes back after a while, further driving also kicked on the Checl L lamp error, at this stage, I was ge ting frustrated.

I noticed 2 things after opening the boot

1) The boot light (One that lights when the boot lid is up) which was working well before (Sunday) had stopped working, I only changed the bulbs on Sunday, and it was after when I plugged the power cable in for the light earlier on saturday, that was when I started having problem with my brake lamps, maybe there was a reason the previous owner disconnected the cable in the first place.

2) On taking the brake light bulb out, I noticed that the bottom metal plate which the bulb sits on, it a little work, the colour is not pure aluminium colour again, this is expected as the bulb would be expected to wear it out a little bit and also make contact as well.

I changed the bulb again even though it was working, made sure it was tight and put in the bulb holder back onto the car, after driving for about 10 minutes last night, no reported problems. But I dont know what will happen if I take the car out for a drive today..

Anyone know what my problem is here.

When the SAM ecu's get internal problems silly non plausible fauts occur. If you read my post in the electrics "silly faults on a 230" you will see that my car was 10 times worse

Anything can have its glitches,, take a look on the BMW forums.

Ring your dealer about the mod that Colechelle spoke of and see what they say
