I know there is quite a lot of discussion about running cars on svo, wvo, etc,. But the price of this is increasing rapidly.

With it being a rather boring bank holiday Monday, I have taken to doing a little test on lard. I've found that if you melt the lard it is soluble with both veg oil and diesel; and I've found that the car runs on this mixture; with quite an interesting smell.

Does anybody else have any experience of trying this?

I am most concerned about viscosity and freezing points, so I am thinking of cutting it with a little bit of petrol as well, so it will be a diesel/veg oil/petrol/lard combo.

I run quite well on lard, unfortunately it gives me a spare tyre...;-)

If you can find a shop which still has a stock of the old fashioned creosote you try cutting it with that, preserve the neighbours fences at the same time. White spirit (turps) is also worth a try as you will lay an inpenetrable smokescreen.

Butter (Oganic) may also be of benefit to the environment. If you have a contact with someone at an airport, perhaps they may be able to siphon a few litres of aviation fuel.

Try Avgas for petrol engines and either Jet A-1 or Jet B for diesels.

Let us know how you get on.

Well, I've put abour 1/2 litre of it into the tank (about 15p worth!) with 30 litres of veg oil (in which it was dissolved) and there was about 5 litres worth of random other liquids in the tank. Done about 30 miles in it, to Stoke and back, and it works and smells quite strongly of crackling.

I don't want to spoil this idea, but in winter its going to give you problems. It will clag bits up, so you might need to make sure you keep the injectors clean, and even use proper diesel for the cold weather.

I am currently testing this with batches in my freezer and batches in my fridge to see what cold temperatures does to this amazing new fuel.

p.s. I find it quite insulting that people aren't taking this seriously  and now I will probably will turn to self-harm.

Saves money on rubber too then.

I have just had a horrible thought, we have all been treating this thread about Lard with flippancy, but what if Simon has really thought this out and is contemplating rendering Gordon Brown down in order to get a lifetime supply of the stuff. We need to get behind him.

We should, and it would be a good idea.

Once he finds something that will assure us it wont clog up the gubbins in cold weather, which it will. Its not a downer, its a fact.

you also should be paying duty on if you use it as fuel! Inland Customs people have a web site and it tells you how to do that on there.

Should work out cheaper than deisel by enough to make it worthwhile and still be legal. Just the cloggin up issues to solve and off you go.

I like the rendering Gordon Brown idea. I don't think I'll take it any further as I can't really be arsed to keep melting blocks of lard and mixing it with veg oil, I do actually have better things to do. And as a few people point out, it will just clog things up.

No duty though, or not for the first 2,500 litres anyway.

Being serious though, I'm sure you could transtetrify (that's probably the wrong word, if not it's definitely the wrong spelling) and it will work. If only I had paid attention in science instead of drawing oversized genitals in the text books...

Actually I think the word you wanted was TESTICULARATE (the text book !)

It seems strange that everybody assumes that I was drawing male genitalia. Is there something I don't know about this forum? Is that the difference between this and 'the other club?' I was wondering about some of those meet ups...
