Late W140 S320 Eco light on climate control stays on, sometimes goes off after pressing button before engine restart.

Anyone had this problem? Is it likely to be a fault in the head unit or 'deeper.' The compressor's working fine and the system filled up. And it the system works fine when the button is not illuminated. Car's 1997 and has done 64K miles from new. Thanks for any help
