I use a Lidle pump. Works great. oil needs to be warm, otherwise it will take forever. When it seems as if you've got all of the oil out give the tube a bit of a wiggle to be sure you've emptied the sump. Remove the oil fiter before you start.

Lidl pump works great, much better than my Pela. Just warm the engine up first, have a stock of 2ltr plastic bottles for the waste oil.

It should work fine, will need at least containers for 8+ ltrs. Prime oil filter/pump otherwise you could damage front crank bearing.

yep , get the oil hot it comes out easily. As @star says , I put 3L+ into the oil filter housing before putting the new filter in

I bought a Sealey 6.5 litre vacuum pump, absolutely brilliant - as above just warm engine for a few minutes

got nearly 8 ltrs out - only took 10 mins, how come the 280 says 8.5 and the 320 7.3?

oh, and the other shocker the tube went in and out easier than the flipping silly dipstick that's always been a fight

The 3.20 is 8.5L as well buddy , or at least mine is . Maybe the earlier IL6 was 7.3L ??
Good Job though

I've got confused somewhere down the line:

When do you remove the oil filter and when do you replace it?
What does star mean by "Prime oil filter/pump otherwise you could damage front crank bearing."?
And what about this: "I put 3L+ into the oil filter housing before putting the new filter in"? Where is the oil filter housing? 3L sounds like a massive amount for a "housing"... 3L into that housing and 5.5L into the oil filler cap?

Could a kind soul please put this all into the correct sequence for me?

Thanks in advance...

Given the slope that's on the ground behind my house, it's always been the case that I had to first get the car level, before doing any kind of maintenance but this actually helps when draining the OM651.
So oil is nice and warm car 100% level, oil filler cap off, and my Draper 10 ltr extractor tube inserted into the dipstick tube, Start pumping ( or if you are feeling a bit lazy, connect to the compressor ) I monitor the amount if oil drained and when it stops, I jack the car up a little so that the dipstick is at its lowest point, and that usually gets another litre or more out, so once it passes the 6 ltr mark in the Draper, ( 6.5 ltrs is factory qty) I'm happy. When refilling, I only replace the exact amount that I have drained. Then I drive it a bit, checking for leaks, leave it overnight, and check the level next morning ( after jacking it up level first ) If its within 1/8" of the max, I'm happy, If it shows over, then I drain a small amount out until it shows slightly less than max.

When you drain/suck the oil out , you also remove the old oil filter and dispose of it .
When the old oil is removed and you start adding the new stuff , put some into the now filterless oil filter housing (to protect the front crank bearing on the om642 engine) and the rest into the top if the engine that you would normally .
Then put the new oil filter in when you have finished .

Hi Noddy, see my other post re OM651 Engine oil change, and it explains how I do an oil change in my Eclass. Personally, when I'm fitting the new filter, I pour a small amount of new oil into the filter housing after inserting the filter, and let it soak through the fabric of the filter, so its not completely dry. I've rarely if ever managed to extract the full 6.5 ltrs, so I assume that there is still some oil in the system. Maybe some people will put some oil down the aperture for the filter, but so far I have not done. Perhaps some one who has done it, can elaborate on the process? With the old now outlawed cartridge type filters, it was SOP to fill the cartridge before screwing back in place.

Many thanks, Jim and Wighty. Just a couple of things to clear up:

You remove the oil filter AS you are draining the oil or BEFORE?
If you attach the extractor tube to the dipstick tube, how does the filter housing get emptied? I'm not sure of the connection between the filter housing and the sump...
Does it have to be exactly 3L that goes into the filter housing?

Many thanks again.

filling the filter housing is only req on 642 engine. Removing the filter top will allow the oil to drain from filter and galleries

You remove the oil filter AS you are draining the oil or BEFORE? Either, it has to come off anyway and makes it faster.
If you attach the extractor tube to the dipstick tube, how does the filter housing get emptied? Gravity I'm not sure of the connection between the filter housing and the sump... Oil is pumped around the engine via the oil pump and gets filtered (filter is in the filter housing) along the way via the filter.
Does it have to be exactly 3L that goes into the filter housing? No, but its just lubes front end, you could fill all from there if you wished.

Time to get your hands dirty, there will be many vids on youtube for changing engine oil, its the start of a slippery slope to self car maintenance.

Have fun and let us know how you get on!

Only just had an 'A' Service but, after being rinsed for £235 for a glorified oil change, I'm on the lookout for how to save money next time...
