What car do you have?

Usually one of the hoses pops of at one of the jets and you just get a dribble come through to the screen, take of the covers behind the jets and take a look.

I have had troubles with some sort of allien life form growing in my washer tank, the slime gums up the jets and they dribble.

The cure after several attempts to unblock the jets with a pin has been to remove the bottle/tank and flush it, fill with strong bleach, flush again, wash in hot(ish) soapy water using a brush to scrub the inside of the tank, then flush again and refit the tank leaving the pump output disconnected.

Then put an adaptor onto the pipe to connect the washer system to the garden hose, remove the jets and flush out the pipes throughly, dont be to handy with the pressure or some pipe or other may fail or a joint split open.

Then fit the jets one at a time to the hose and flush those as well as you can, preferably backwards.

Put the jets back on and reconnect the pipes.

With luck the slime will go away.

I have refrained from using washer additive since I first had this problem and have not had a re-occurence of slime since. Before the sytem became blocked I had real troubles with a greasy screen which always went worse after the washers had been used so presumably this may be an indicator that all is not well in the screen wash storage department. The greasy smear (if you have that too) is a horror to clear of the screen and will probably take several good scrubbings with a prepriatory windscreen polish to remove completly. Dont bother putting a new wiper blade on untill the grease has been removed.

This is not only on my 124 its also happened to my nasty little rover and I have seen it (slime in the tank & greasy screen) on quite a number of other vehicles, I am convinced that it is something to thing to do with the blue stuff that they call screen washer additive and it does not seem to make any difference as which makers addtive has been used.

The blue stuff has until this been in my standard arsenal of things to put into cars for many years but only in the last two or three have I seen this bad gunge problem, it may be coincident with euro rules (ROHS) about which chemicals you are allowed to sell to the public and the formulation of the additives has been changed, it certainly no longer smells like I remember it.

For winter I now use a 5-10% addition of isopropyl alcohol for anti freeze and a tiny spot of that liquid soap that her majesty uses on her hands and face, so far I aint seen any more slime.

Dam, you might make me look silly here Jez!!!

I always try to over complicate things!!

On my S-Class - I had 2'ish jets of spurting water. Attacked all the jets with a pin - now I have SIX jets, all now squirting merrily away.

By the way, to avoid slime build-up, buy the pre-prepared stuff - cheap as chips with BOGOF offers at Halfords/Motorways.
