The time LCD is starting to play up IE some of the lines dont display so you get cfi or 1-- oclock! I now know how to remove the whole instrument display, but can the time element (lcd bit on the bottom right hand side) be replaced? if so how easily?

All of the modules are available as spare parts. Fitting them depends on how confident you are with this type thing. Its a matter of removing the outer casing. Most LCD clocks are fitted with a ribbon cable so just unplug.

TV, I know you are the oracle on these matters but when I contacted pretty much every car electronics repairer in the UK, they all refused to touch my dash, with several of them citing 'no spares available'. Are you sure that VDO supply the displays and components for the facelift binnacles?

All of the circuit diagram and parts are listed. I do not know why MB would put up this info if cant be done. The firm in the link below fix C class temp and clocks.
If I had all of the car details I will have a go at MB. £650 to fix a clock is stupid,
