Leaking Boot

Hi Folks,

I am now the proud owner of my first Merc! :D:D

It's a signal red 91 190e with full grey leather, orthapeadic seats, cruise control, aircon and sunroof and it all works (except the roof).

Anyway, back to the point... my question is this:

I've got a small leak on both sides of the boot that drip in and hit the wheelarches when it rains. It seems to be coming from under the bottom corners of the windscreen rather than the boot seals.

Is this a common thing? I think it might be the seal on the rear windsceen but I can't spot any obvious problems with it from the outside so can't try sealing it.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Sit in the boot and have an assistant apply a watering can to the areas. Spread a little Vaseline around the boot seal and see if there is any areas on the boot lid that the Vaseline hasn't touched.

If you have a sun roof, there is a rear drain hose that might be off or damaged

Thanks guys, I'll double check.

I have heard that it could be rot around the windscreen but as there is no rust at all on the rest of the car I can't see it being that.

Malcolm, is it easy to check the drain hose? I need to get into the roofspace anyway to take a look at why the sunroof isn't working.

What do we reckon to the windscreen seals being the problem as i could get it changed for £30 on my insurance but don't trust them to to get all the lovely metal trim back on right.

There are quite a few threads on the sunroof motor/cable so pls have a search. You could our some water around the sunroof with the bot open and see if it drains into the boot and were at.

In the left hand side above the wheel arch you will find the manual opening drive for the roof, there should be a special handle in the tool kit.

i think its rusty underneath the rear windscreen seal at the bottom in the corners. try lifting the seal or take the screen out and u'll find it,

The sun roof job is a bit of a sod to do it will take lots of time since there are lots of bits to come off to get the lining out. Be carefull that you dont damage the roof lining, set aside two days if you can get and afford the bits.

Thanks wireman, I've heard it can be a right pain. Think I might leave the repair of it for now as I've still got aircon. I think I'll just try to cure the rattle I get on certain roads and check the drain pipe.

star, I hope the screen mounts not rotting! Sounds like one hell of a problem if it is! There is no rust on the rest of the car anywhere so hopefully it's not.

blobcat, I've checked the boot seals and they're good.

Just the sunroof drain to check and then if it's not that I think it may well be the seal on the windscreen.

Do we reckon it's a stealership job or can any fitter do a good job?

Thanks
