Parrot of Doom...or others

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GREAT NEWS !

Have identified the fuel leak. It is the first fuel hose going from (fuel out of) the fuel filter towards the common rail. Parrot of Doom. Thankyou very much for your assistance (it is pipe no.29 as shown on your diagram and as suggested as one of the likely culprits)

Couple of press fit releases and away they will come.

One question. do I buy the hose with the fittings on the end or can I simply replace the hose onto the fittings.

I have been told if I just replace the hose I will have hells own job getting it on the black plastic bit that clips into the fuel "thingy" sealed with an o ring (I will definitely be replacing the o rings). They are standard old fashioned push fit with no fixing clips.

Would appreciate your advice, if I can just do the hose then will do tomorrow if not and I need the bits pre-fitted on the ends will be a trip to stealer on Monday.

Thx as always.

Cheers Malcolm

The third attachement shows item no.29 as the offending article.

Sorry for sounding dumb, but if the picture has the bits with the white clips you push in to disconnect on either end is that what i would order, or can I simply buy a length of hose and fit it to the ends ?

Have you tried cutting an ½ inch off the pipe and re fitting the end or use a small clamp. Just thinking on this. Are the pipes plastic or rubber.

diesel pipe push fit

Malcolm,

the pipes are the hard (very hard and brittle on mine) type.

Are you saying though that if I buy some identical hose I can push fit on. There are no clamps on any of the hoses to clamp it onto the housing (it is a 2001 320cdi W210). Or can it not be push fitted. Does it also matter if the hose is shaped (no.29 in the 3 diagram you kindly provided)

I know I probably sound like an idiot, but i am keen to give it a go and save cash I haven't got at the moment, but at the same time, i want it to work.

Cheers for all your help

Adam

These pipes go hard and brittle with heat. I would buy a length of new pipe, by warming the ends in hot water the connectors could be pushed in, though this pipe is under pressure its not that high at this point.

I know that there are no clamps on it I was thinking if some could be added.

If the pipe is the plastic type, shops like indoor fish aquarium sell it as do any garage that does injection work.

Thx to all

Will be a trip to the dealer tomorrow to spend my £7.

Malcolm, wasn't trying to be a smart reference the clips, just trying to explain in my, very, untechnical way.

Really do appreciate everyones help, this is such a good forum, I dread to think how much a dealership would have charged to put this right.

Thx again.

Success and tq to all

Ordered pipe no 29 - guy at merc parts dept on the phone wasn't sure which pipe off the fuel filter (told him it was part no.29 and he was most impressed - but nothing more dangerous than a little knowledge!!)

In the end went for the pipe with the "housing" on each ends + o rings as it was only £17.

Thx again to all

pipe fitted - how fiddly ??!!. not difficult just a pain to get the large fitting end through the very small gaps (if you want to route same as original).

Anyway, fired her up and after two cranks off she went. Stuck head under bonnet and the bubbles into pipe 29 from the fuel filter were a zillion a minute (yet the car purred - as much as a cdi 320 can). Being quite miffed I had not cured it, my buddy who fiddles with big lumpy diesel tractor units suggested the trusty Italian tune. I took it down the mway at 3,500 rpm for 2/3 minutes - not quite thrashing, but she is my pride and joy.

Cutting to the chase I can only assume I had a whole load of trapped air as she now start perfect and have even tested her by parking nose up with only a gallon in the tank and leaving for 3 days...you no wot; started first time.

Additional bonus, mpg has significantly increased (didn;t think the pipe was that leaky. Now get 30-32 drivinginto London and ...wait for it, last night on M25, admittedly feathering the accelerator at 65, got 40.5mpg over a 40 mile journey. Appreciate this is according to the computer but if it is out, it was out before, therefore improvement to some degree valid.

THANKS to everyone that contributed and gave me the courage to give what in the end was a really easy job (excluding swearing, scabbed knickles). You guys definitely have given me the confidence to takcle other stuff (but within reason and with your usual help and support - but definitely not as ambitious as PoD. This forum is the nuts !!

If you think that is fiddly, wait until you have to replace the line that goes from the lift pump to the high pressure pump!
