Hiya all...was down k/fit getting oil change (its cheaper than doing it yourself.. but always watch what they do!!) when my car was up on ramp had look round underneath and noticed diff oil seal is leaking at front driveshaft end , found out since that this is quite common but where is the refill plug? (could not see it) what size spanner /socket? and how much oil does it take.....................1996 E300 (non turbo) diesel.. 85000 miles...thanks for any info....you guys know more than any merc dealership thats for sure..

First thing to do is to make sure that the vents are clear, as if blocked the oil will be forced out once it starts to foam

Apologies for jumping in on your thread Tonyb but Ive just done the diff oil on my car - its not exactly the same as yours, its a 2001 210 22cdi - its a long story but the useless BMW/MERC indie near me (dont worry I wont be taking it there again) sh*t the life out of me a while ago when he said my rear diff was shot because it was a bit wet ! so I finally got round to changing the oil this weekend - and yes it wasnt that shot cos most of the oil was still in it!! If you have the same diff as me then the drain plug is on the drivers side of the diff, it takes a 14mm allen key - the fill plug is on the passenger side - the fill plug is higher up the diff than the drain plug (obviously) that to takes a 14mm allen key - its easy to do - mine took about 3 500mil (I think they were 500mil bottles) of 80/90 gear oil - on the drive into work this morning (some 57 miles of motorway) the diff was definately quieter.

Hopefully you will have the same diff in your car - or more or less the same - apologies if its not.

Television.... you mentioned "Vents" - where are these located on the diff?

Hi,
When you change the diff oil ensure that the filler plug is free before draining, as you would,nt want a diff empty of oil and a siezed filler plug.
May sound obvious but very easily forgotten.

Just overhauled my diff at the weekend. It is a 14mm allen key but as the thread before mentioned, make sure you can undo the filling plug before emptying the diff. Also check amount required as mine took 1.1 litres which brought the level to just under the filler plug. Its a real bugger of an angle to refill at too, it takes a long time and its impossible to empty a 1 litre bottle in, you just cant get it high enough. I used a small funnel and plastic cup to pour the oil in. hope this helps.
