This topic has been discussed many times. Saddle soap seems to work well:-D :-D I find it is more satisfying to let the wife do it whilst I supervise

I am doing the same job on my C class tomorrow for the first time.
Did quite a bit of research on a few forums about what to use and the favourite was Gliptone.
A bottle of cleaner and one of conditioner.
Got mine from ebay.
As a general wipe over baby wipes are meant to be good.

As a retired saddler, I'd suggest using 'Hide Food' as that will help to nourish and feed the leather. If using saddlesoap, my personal preference would be for one containing glycerine - and don't forget to buff it up afterwards to remove any greasy residue. ;)

Can you still get *Dubbin*?

Not that I'd advocate using anything like it of course :)

Gliptone is good...as suggested by D3Less.

I just use a (slightly) damp cloth on mine. Nothing else.

(Edited to add I Gliptone it about once a year)

Yes, Dubbin is still available from places like Millets, but I wouldn't recommend it for one's car seats! Fine for weatherproofing walking boots etc, though.

The trouble with only a damp cloth is that it doesn't nourish the leather or help to keep it soft and supple, but will rather dry it out over time. That's why I suggested Hide Food, although there are sure to be many other similar and good products available on the market nowadays.

Although my MB has cloth upholstery, my old Wolsey had leather seats and in places those had dried out and the surface was rough and flakey. It had previously belonged to a chap who bred Welsh cobs and would have been in and out of it wearing wet/mucky work cloths quite a bit. The damage to the leather on the driver's seat especially was noticeable. Air conditioning and heaters etc., won't help the leather to retain its surface pliability either.

We all used Sadle soap in the RREC for all of the cars, both pre war and post.

It will soften the leather and help stop it creasing in the same place as it does on MB's on the side surports to the back rest and edge of the squab

In Allisons BMC car ,they only ever used grade 3 leather, that is a coarse grain leather, but hyde food could do wonders with that.

When I do my open top cars, the smell of the leather fills the garage.

When we bought our E220 Coupe, the steering wheel had a rough area, where the previous owner's sweaty hand had no doubt rested all the time. Someone on this forum suggested saddle soap and it worked wonders. About time for another application now.

Mb seem to use all sorts of different 'leather'. The leather in mine is quite hard stuff, yet I've seen softer leather in S classes (Nappa presumably) and different stuff again in some other E classes and C's. I'd read that some of the leather is artifical. If so, how do you tell and do you clean it differently?

Leather from MB in recent years has been Standard,Nappa and exclusive Nappa. with Nappa, around 97 on, this was quite smooth and stiff and this went on to be exclusive Nappa, and this is softer

The only way to tell on the artificial leather is it look at the backing on a bit under the seats,or by the smell.

Yes there are problem if you put hyde food on to artificial, it will not soak in and it will dry with a sticky tacky feel. Many people with SL's think that the roll bar and backs of the seats atc are leather, they are not, neither is a lot of the door trim, only some parts.

One thing that I was taught by the Connelly Bros when I was with the RR club was never use scented soap for cleaning leather,as it rots the stiches

One thing for sure there is no thing as 'a one for all' product. When using Vynal cleaners only ever use the Matt version, also clean the surface first with soap and water,if you do not and just use the vynal cleaner the ingrained dirt will be trapped under this, and it is a pig to remove.

MB-Tex is used on some cars. I was shown it by a salesman and wouldn't have known it wasn't real. On the C Class I was looking at I think it was only available on Classic and it was about £350 extra.
I don't think the perforated leather in mine seems real, but it is apparently.

Mine is light grey, and my last car had beige leather which used to pick up the colour off jeans. I've always cleaned and conditioned with Meguiars Gold Class Leather Cleaner Conditioner which I've bought here after seeing it recommended elsewhere: http://www.speeding.co.uk/acatalog/Meguiars_.html

I find it gets into the grain best if used with terry toweling. It's quick and easy to use.

Does anybody have any views on the Connolly Hide Care kits that are available?

http://www.holden.co.uk/viewProduct...scode=0866&groupname=Care & Storage&group=093

Connoll bros in Euston Rd London went bankrupt some 15 years ago, and the name was dormant for years, someone has taken the name and is using it for their own products Much the same way as names in the TV and car trade, two individual firms market goodmans, two market Grundig, neither has anything to do with the original.

I would not trust anything in a Connolly jar now.

I see, so what IS the best thing to use on Exclusive Nappa? I don't want to use any old rubbish as my car deserves the best.

I will put up what I used on my 129 and what I use on the 230 in the morning, they deserve the best. I have Exclusive Nappa, its a sadle soap/ hyde food,,,,,,and I am fussy, we used on the RR's and others.
