I'm thinking of changing my C250TD 98 for a 220 CDI but don't want one where the standards dropped with problems. As a guide what ages/periods ie 99 2000 is it a safe to consider for quality and reliability?

E has a lot of other problems, rusting like nothing on earth, electrical, bad air con systems. You did not say whether you are considering E or C class but the build at 199 in my opinion [and my bank managers opinion since he sees the bills] is not at all good. In space of 12 months car is on way for 6th garage trip for replacement doors. all 4 of them. Rust.

If you are still happy with the 250, then I would keep it. You will miss it when it's gone. The C220 is ok but it isn't a replacement for yours. The E is fine if you watch for the key areas such as rust (Olaf has a particularly bad one - mine is farily clean - still on my second claim though) but the newer ones don't last as well and do cost more to maintain due to the electronics which don't last anything like as well as the old mechanical technology in yours. I'm afraid the days of 150,000 miles without serious bills are gone.
