Hi Guys,

I bought a set of tyres for my car and after a year i have been told i need to replace them.

what makes tyres last long or wear quicker and what should be the average life?

I know the area my wifes folks live in is filled with pot holes its worse then the moon and we drive there very often could that be causing it?

thanks

It depends on the way the car is driven, the make of the tyres, and the tyre pressures

Your car is a 202 I think from memory, are the ball joints good and steering gear.

If the tyres are feathering, then this shows that the tracking is out and this will scrub the tread off quite fast.

You can use the tyres down to till the tread is level with the wear indicators on the tyre

As already noted it is mileage that wears them. If you are a 'low miler' then a car just standing in all weathers, particularly the sun, will cause the sidewalls to crack thus shortening the life considerably.

My last set were changed at about 25k but they were Pirelli P6000 the set before, can't recall the make, lasted some 34k I am on Coopers at the moment having done some 8k and there appears to little or no wear showing.

Have just read through all the above and agree with all the comments. Just as a further note tyres are designed to be replaced at most every five years. There is a date stamp on them next to the DOT number, it will look something like this 0904. This denotes to say that the tyre was built in the 09th week of 2004. Therefore 4607 would denote the 46th week of 2007 and so on and so forth.

Acceleration reduces tyre life pretty dramatically. Jeremy Clarkson managed to wear out the tyres on a 6 litre Mercedes in 35 miles.

On my S320cdi the rear tyres lasted about 11k miles but the acceleration was lovely.

On the E class. I'm being more sensible and have done 15k miles so far on the original set. With real care I think an E class could do 20k on a set of tyres.

Having the right tyre pressure matters and regular checks.

Many folks say that Michelins last at least as long as most. I have always had good miles from them.

Tyres

Hi,

Car has 65,000 miles on it and i hardly drive it. I got the tyres installed by quick fit

I am getting a new set of continental tyres now. I do accelrate a hell of a lot so that could be effecting the tyres from what you all are saying.

Kind Regards

J

Do they? I know they have a load rating and a speed rating.

This is law in the USA so all tyres made there will have this rating, but not others

Michelin Primacy HPs last about 26k miles on my E430.
I have had tyres last only 10kmiles before.
It really depends on the tyre, the way that you drive and the mileage.
Some of the cheaper, "sport" biased tyres have a softer compound, which give better grip, but causes them to wear more quickly.

My Michelin`s (Primacy) have done 42,000 miles and still have plenty of tread.
I travel 20,000 miles plus per year, but if you accelerate and brake sharply and go round corners like Stirling Moss used to,then you will need to replace them sooner than you need to.
As one grows older and the pennies start to pinch, then one gets a little bit smarter!

Happy motoring.

(Treadwear rating)

It is a US thing, but most tyres do have it - can be difficult to spot though. My Michelin Primacy HP's are marked as treadwear 240.

It's a bit meaningless though as the manufacturers set their own rating and it's a comparitive rating, with a reference of 100, so 240 should last 2.4 times longer than 100. However the comparison is only really valid with other tyres from the same manufacturer.

The people who are getting high mileages are doing well - I drive my C270 almost exclusively on long steady motorway runs and the HP's will last about 25K miles on the back, although the fronts look like they'll do 50K.

My best ever was 70,000 on a set of Michelin X Pilots during the late 1990s. Volvo 850 TD, motorway driving usually. 10,000 mile service interval and front to rear swap each service. Replaced all 4 tyres with the same type and had reasonable life left when I returned the car at 123,000.

That was a front wheel drive car with manual gears. Brake pads lasted 80,000 miles too and fuel economy was overall 44 mpg IIRC.

Steady cruising speeds, anticipation and light use of brakes (if any) were probably the main factors.

Current S320 CDI managed 40,000 on the original Continentals and I replaced again with like for like. I find them quiet and they give good adhesion.

Pretty good description, there ........... Most euro tyres, and pretty much all chinese/Japanese tyres have them now ............. My new MB has them....along with the wet your pants "MO" logo on them .......... :D

I've just had two new rear tyres fitted. One was a Continental that had done about 9K (been on the car since last August). The other was some make I have never heard of and had been on the car since before I bought it (18 months ago).

Aparrently Continentals wear quite quickly because they are relatively soft.

The tyres I have had fitted are Kumho KH31's. They were £75 each, inc. valve and balance. I have only had them on for 2 weeks so can't give feedback on wear etc.yet. They seem quiet and OK for grip (although I don't "throw it around"

Hope this helps, or is food for thought.

I have started using the Falken ZE912s. Had them on for the last two months and so far excellent.

I never hear a bad word about Falkens so I thought I'd give them a go as there are plenty of good reports about them.

Will have a better idea of the wear rate next year.

Good philosophy Malcolm. Once you put petrol in the tank, it is written off. Any miles you do on that tank of fuel are therefore a bonus. You are not related to any Buddhists are you?

And I am certain that you are not old enough to take the view "If go tonight, I shall die happy knowing that there was still a legal tread on my tyres"!

I think we pensioners do take a prudent view on consumable costs - even just to know where the money went!
