Light display and audible sound from unit on top of dash

New owner of ML 350 CDI 2011.....please advise - there is a small unit on top of the dash which has led lateral display lights and an audible warning sound. What exactly is it and where can I find out what the lights mean? Looking for your kind support.

Parking sensors - more lights the closer you get to an object. Should have one in the back for the rear as well

When you hit the wall all of the lights at that end of the car should be on and the unit bleeping

Me too - I only realised it was there the other day. Mind you, with rear/360° Camera, it is rather obsolete

I've a reverse camera but I still default to using mirrors.
