Hi all

('93 W124 E320 Kombi)

Searched the threads and found similar faults, but not quite the same.
The illumination behind my clocks has died! The dimmer works on the temp gauge and on the light switch, but nothing on the panel illumination. I have checked fuse 3 and the red one behind the console, also replaced the 2 x bulbs at the top, but still nothing. Checked the solder on the back of the dimmer, stripped it down blew it out, but still no joy?????

Any ideas? How do i get to the back of the light switch to check the connection plug, and is this a possible cause???

Yours desperately
SF

What has happened here I think is that one of the copper tracks on the PCB has cracked, very common on the 129.

You can see the lamp holders , and they have 2 connections, the live and ground side. The copper tracks can be tested with an ohmmeter and its best to remove the 2 or 3 bulbs that light the main instruments, to avoid any miss readings, and you just check for continuity from the live side of the lamp holders to where the live comes from the dimmer.

As of 87 these cars have an electric dimmer and I have printed this off for you, there are 2 outputs on the dimmer circuit and the one for the cluster could have failed, and this is very possible, you can check this with the info that I send you

I have sent it, and another one with the pin outs, I think that the dimmer module is at fault, and you can test the 2 outputs, you know that one works

Sorted:D:D:D

Not 100% sure what the German MB dealer did, but he said it was just the 3 bulbs at the top, however, i had already changed them??? They had also kinked the speedo cable, so i turned around and took it back in, they did that too.

Cost - FREE:D:D:D

The guy said "no problems, have a nice day"

Top MB dealer in my opinion

Many thanks for your help guys

Regards
