Inmy 129 I have noticed that when I leave the lights on and open the door the warning boinger ( for want of a better word) doesn't boing, beep or do anything much! :(

When I turn the lights off with the door open as it crosses from "sidelights" to "off" there is a momentary audible noise - sometimes

I know I have an propbelm with the binnacle circuitry as the fuel guage illumination light doesnt operate and Mec have said the PCB needs replacing could this be connected. i would ahve thought a break in the circuit would have meant no nose at all...

Any suggestions??

The fault in the cluster is local to the lamps in it and not the rest of the car.

As you're getting some noise my first thought would have been a loose connection.
Barring that get your passenger to say "boing" when exiting the car :)

I'm sure the illumination of all gauges in a 129 is done by replacable bulbs & separate to the LCD ones. Your light warning fault sounds like the light switch itself, although these are usually very reliable.

Thanks Barry - a heap of help as always.. :D

Type - its not the illumination I have a problem with - I know the illumination circuit has a problem just on the fuel guage as the stealers have had it out and put it on diagnostic then given me smelling salts when they said it was over £800 to fix it! Malcolm is able to repair the track which he has done before.

I only wonder if it could be related as the noise - when it does briefly happen without the aid of a p[assenger getting out (Barry) - comes from behind the binnacle and appears to be on the same side as the fuel guage...

Little me has repaired 2 instrument clusters for the lamps not working on 2000 on cars, the fault is where the PCB track goes open circuit due to a manufacturing fault on the PCB. that is normally an easy fix

With regards to the gong, that sounds like the switch is arcing and going open circuit.

This is what I was refuring to. This is lit by a normal capless bulb.

yes they are,if ever you get this fault you can meter the fault and find the track open circuit, under the magnifying glasses we use the break can just be seen often to near the bulb for working comfort.
It is a waste of time trying to flow solder on its own as it will soon go again, the repair must be done by soldering a wire over the break, the hard bit is when its so near to where the bulb plugs in, if the sldering is too high the bulb will not go in.

This could effect other cars in the range as the instrument cluster PCB's could all be made by the same manufacture. there is a huge difference between the MB price of £900 and the meager £850 that I charge to fix the problem. It can take up to an hour to do.
