Good afternoon,

My car still keeps going into limp mode and it’s doing my head in.. firstly, it’s a 2003 CLK 270CDI

It’s fine when I first start it in a morning, then when i restart it once it’s warmed up it won’t rev above 3000 revs and lacks power.. if I stop and start it a few times is sometimes corrects itself but not always.. today it won’t come out of limp mode at all..

No warnings on the dash, no indication of what it could be..

Last night when it was ok, I unplugged the MAF sensor and it went into limp mode then when I plugged it back in, it was fine again, until the next time I started it, then it was back in limp mode again.. perhaps a new MAF could fix the problem? I can get one from euro for about £80 but it’s a risk if that’s not the issue and I have no access to a code reader at the minute..

It’s been worse today since I played with the MAF..

Also, I don’t think my cooling fan is working, could that be linked? There is a warning for that saying “coolant visit workshop”

Any ideas?

There's only one real answer I'm afraid and that's get it plugs in a diagnostic reader. Star would be the best bet. Don't start throwing money at it thinking its this and that. I done this once. It may well be the MAF.

Maybe the car is in limp mode because the coolant is low ? Is it low ?

I thought plugging it in would be the best option but thought I’d get opinions first see if it could may well be the MAF...

And, no the coolant is fine, recently fitted a water pump and the level it spot on.. but the coolant warning needs to be addressed and I’m thinking it’s a fault with the fans maybe but that’s another issue

Thinking of it, when I had it plugged in a few months ago, they said something about EGR valve, but can’t remember what the problem was..

MAF, EGR, M55, they are all related to boost problems, and can be cross referenced and fault in anywhere engine gas exchange process may trigger any of those faults.

Is this the same car you had empty coolant that you drove 60 miles home without issue ?

Yeah, it wasn’t empty though, I kept topping it up.. that was sorted by replacing water pump..

UPDATE:

Ive not solved this issue.. I wasn’t able to get access to any diagnostic equipment with the lockdown but I had a feeling that it was something to do with the MAF so I took a risk and bought a used one from eBay..

£17 delivered and it has solved the problem.. no more limp mode..

I know it may not last very long, and could only be a temporary fix with it been a used one but for now, it’s working as it should, atleast until everything improves and I can get access to diagnostics..
