Limp Mode!!!

Well the ****** saga goes on!! Not only have Mercedes Benz Liverpool relieved me of £462.34 to "cure" the constant dropping into limp mode, the car has just gone into it again!!!! Now originally this occurred when I first bought the car so was fixed (under guarantee) by the people I bought it off. This comprised of numerous trips to there auto electricians who replaced the MAF and ultimately all the "secondary air induction" parts of the engine. It lasted for two weeks!!! In the end, the auto elec people said that they had run out of options and I would have to take it to MB themselves. I did this and after about 5 trips to them with yet more switches/solenoids replaced and faults cleared, they agreed to take the car in for 2/3 days to give it a "thorough" diagnosing. They then diagnosed the oil leaking into the wiring loom which according to the members of this forum, is a very common problem. The bill was duly paid and the car was fine for two weeks. As the problem has recurred then what should I do? I am waiting for MB to ring me back at the moment but must say that when they do, I will be raising the question of the wrong diagnosis and the subsequent bill!!!!
Has anyone else had this amount of false diagnosis to cure limp mode?

Not happy

Andrew

As you have paid once for them to fix it they ned to fix it free of charge this time.

It is obviously a tricky fault to find and not many things can cause it.

So what did mb change for £462

£27.20 for Magnet, £1.85 for Plug, £15.00 for Starter Line, and 65 pence for a ****** cable tie!!!

Parts total £44.70. To diagnose a "common" fault £417.64 !!!!!!!!

Taking it back tomorrow and will explain to them that it needs to be put right!

Andrew

It is a problem with these cars, you would almost think the bleeding thing thinks that it is normal..one thing you should do is ensure your battery is pumping out a constant 10+ volts..the elecronics in these cars are extremely sensitive to voltage drop and will drop into limp mode should the battery voltage drop below 10v even with the altenator charging the system..

Thanks Xtractorfan
I had the voltage checked when it was at the auto electrician......infact it was their first thought. All ok voltage wise.

Hi Black55,

As it stands, according to the garage I bought it from, just under £1000 has been spent on this fault!.....Makes you wonder if they actually know what the fault codes mean.....Sorry about the rant but this is getting beyond a joke and I need a car all the time with MB not being able to supply till end of next week! Anyway I think I will have a large glass of wine (= bottle).
Cheers,

Andrew

Hi Alancee,
I must admit this is starting to put me off mercs...I have always had BMW's Audi's and even a Jag. Did not have anywhere near this trouble with them. What a shame MB have come to this.

Hi, any success with this problem?
I bought a C180k brand new in 2004, but since 2006 the car loses power and is limited to 3 or 4K rpm. The MB dealership have replaes all pipes on intake, the kommpressor and throttle body today. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Well ml270 I also have had all the secondary air intake system replaced during the past 4 months and two days ago it went into limp mode again! So I took it in again this morning and after two hours was told it was the Air Filter!!!! So take your pick, it could be ****** anything!! If you look at all my posts you will have an idea about all the parts it could be. Sorry I can’t tell you what it was eventually because I really don’t know nor do I think Mercedes do either. They are more than happy to take loads of money from you whilst they work through the very long list of what it could be but as you will no doubt know, this is a very expensive way to us! I have to say at this stage I do not believe that it could only have been an air filter. Will not be buying another Mercedes!!!!!

Unfortunately, this development does not address the problems that have, and no doubt will occur with this car. As I have been told 6 ****** times before by MB, "this was definitely the problem”. Told it was the Air Filter this time!! I really do not believe them......suffice to say I will not be at all surprised if this happens again! Where I go from here is another problem as the dealer I bought it from has just turned around and said that they will only split the last bill (£462.34). The reason given was that as they would not have authorised that! Given that it was them who told me to take it to MB and deal with them direct; I think that they are out of order and this is yet another chapter that will put me off any Mercedes Benz cars in the future. This has been nothing but trouble from the start and I will have to take this further. Sorry to be so negative but this is beyond a joke!

PS does anyone know just how many problems can put a car into “limp mode”?

Andrew

Yeas I totally agree with your sentiments regarding the limp home mode, this actually makes the car seem much worse than it actually is.. The other point I have to make on this is the diagnostic machine operators, I kinda get the feeling that they dont attempt to utilise the machine to its full potential, many of these cars will show ..for instance..air flow meter faults, and the garages will fit new flow meters(MAF) but in many instances the MAF problem only arises as a result of the car reverting to limp mode..so in effect you have a secondary fault being blamed for the initial problem... I hope that makes sense ... and andrew i had my voltage checked as well and it read 11.5volts but I topped the battery up with distilled water and trickle charged it and my car hasnt had a problem since ...and all last year it was playing me up like mad and five times on a star diagnostic. If i were you id have a word with a decent indie and MB Uk

Hi Xtractorfan,

I have asked around and found a highly recommended indie and will take my car there in the future. I will also check the battery tomorrow. Some scrote pinched the star emblem last night and I suppose that was the last straw as far as this car was concerned...trouble is I really like it. Very surprised that MB sold the emblem for £21 and fitted it free this morning....guess they felt guilty!! Thanks for the advice and sorry if I have come over very aggressive but I just feel that we are being screwed left right and ****** center!! Had a nice meal with some wine so have calmed down and taken stock!!

Cheers,

Andrew.

Injector Bridge?

Hi,
Had an interesting reply from a recent previous post in that it is possible to "bridge the injectors" which apparently removes the "limp mode". Does anyone have any information on this?
Cheers,

Andrew.
