I’m buying a pallet of roof tiles this weekend and need to buy a roof rack to get them home.
Blank stares greeted me at the dealers when I asked - I can only assume they are a bit sniffy about the idea of someone using a Mercedes Benz car to carry building materials.
Anyway, I’m looking for the sort of roof rack that clips to the edges of the roof above the windows. Mercedes have obviously thought of this eventuality by including the “roof rack bracket clearance facility”, cleverly dropping the windows 10mm or so as you open the doors.
Assuming I secure the brackets tightly to the edge of the roof - trapping a good thickness of material - can any of the experts on this forum advise me on the maximum recommended roof rack loading.
My handbook says nothing on this topic.
The tiles themselves weigh 200 kg, but I am willing to make two journeys, if necessary.;)

Wouldnt it be cheaper to rent a transit for the day?

Not sure how you'd attach a rack to a 209. Thule don't make anything for the 209, so I suspect it would be an expensive dealer only setup if one even exists. at all.

Don't you know someone with a van or even an estate car? Worst case, I'd put some thick blankets on the seats and fill the car and boot a couple of times. 100kg per trip is no problem and with the weight of a tile, I'm guessing that the bulk shouldn't be a problem.

I think that the max roof loading is nearer 50KG and how can you stop them from falling off

Do Thule make a fabric reinforcement kit to prevent indentation into the mohair? I hear what Jib is saying about hiring a Transit, but a roof rack would be really useful anyway for moving bales of hay and even the occasional appliance (washing machine or AGA).

the max load on our 124 and 210

estates is between 80 and 100kg, depending on where you read it. I also have a roof box and bars for the 202 and the max load for that is about 80 kg. That much weight up top does show in the handling, and I certainly wouldn't want to put an AGA on top, well, not until it had cooled down first.

As long as you keep it down to less than 80 kg, you should be alright, but I'd still rather carry weight in the car, and light but bulky on top if I had to.

With things on the roof there is always the risk of damage when loading and unloading

Yes Malcolm, and I mustn't press the "soft top" switch either .... otherwise the tiles, hay, washing maching, AGA and all will end up in the boot.

Doug - you cheeky little bugxer. April 1sting everyone like that!
And you fussing over which wheel centres for Christmas. As if you'd carry roof tiles inside it even, never mind on the cabrio top!!!

Yes, I think I caught a few out this morning.....
Actually, I've just bought the Autoglym cabrio roof cleaning and reproofing kit and will set about it this weekend, weather permitting....

As the CLK comes in many forms, I did not read the details at the bottom (Soft top)

I only ever read all of the signatures if looking for a clue on the car when fault finding

has the AGA cooled down enough yet????

I didn't see the cabrio bit until after I'd replied, that just makes me a joker as well then I suppose.
