Locked out of boot on my 320 CLK

Hi

I have a 2001 "Y" 320 CLK.

Driving this morning the the climate control fan ramped up to maximum all on its own and no matter what I tried, I could not change it. It seems like the whole climate control system locked up. Worse, when I got home and removed the ignition key it was still running full pelt.

In desperation I disconnected the earth on the battery and closed the boot to leave for a while.

I went back out to reconnect the battery but could not open the boot, even with the three emergency keys I have that all work fine with the driver's door.

I can't release the rear seats as the levers are in the boot.

Any ideas ? Thanks in advance for any help.

Jeff

I cant look up more info until this evening, if you have a battery or 12 volt source you can energise the system by putting the + cable onto the big terminal on the starter, maybe hard to get to though. Some cars have external connections near or around the rear wheel arches for when this happens. you could join up to the head lamp fuse as this is always live. Its a two handed job as someone needs to operate the boot lock while momentry joining up.

Thanks Malcolm. Well, I've made some progress. Got the boot open. Seems like 5 years of no one using a key in the boot lock caused it to seize up. Good old WD-40 did the trick.

I still have the issue of the climate control fan running as soon as I connect the battery. Doesn't make any difference if the ignition is on or off. Turning the fan speed control makes no difference. Could it be a stuck relay ?

Any ideas gratefully received. :)

Problem solved. Drainage holes blocked causing regulator to sit in water and burn out.

Best not to park under trees!

(1) Fan running non stop - fuse removed post water and leaves when feet got wet!

-> is repairing it something to tackle myself (ie plug and play parts like fuses) or should I bite the bullet and let merc do it - any ideas on cost '99 CLK 320
-> had yours fixed yet RTFM?
-> only seen one other blog like this from chat in New Z'land who paid $2000 - £800 to fix the problem

I'd imagine clearing the drain holes are easy enough. The regulator is plug and play should you need to replace it.
The reg for my E240 was £130 from the dealer - no one else seems to do them. Took me 20 mins to swap it.

Thanks

Thanks clearing the water was not too demanding..and the dealer is replacing the motor and regulator for under £300 whilst doing the needed 2nd warrenty respray for bubbling paint on the rear arches!
