Hi all,

So I’m looking at buying my first E class convertible.

I’m looking to spend 8k.

Would just like some pros and cons in engine size v performance, running costs and common problems.

Thank you

Hello and welcome,

Buy a V6 or V8 petrol, all Mercedes are heavy and smaller engines don’t always give the increased economy you’d expect.

Ok thank you, is there anything I need to look out for when buying? I’ve done some research, the roof cables are hydraulic and can split? I’m looking at the diesel are there common problems with EGR or DPF?

Thank you

Roof cables can be an issue as well as the air cap not going back in.

Unless you’re covering >15k miles per year you’re worse off in a diesel now. I’m doing over 15K in a V6 3.0 petrol and averaging ~32mpg for >70K miles.

EGR and DPF can be a problem along with oil leaks on the V6 diesels - they’re common on here and a good engine.

2010 A207 E500 (the Summer Car and Winter Garage Queen)!
Welcome! I've had mine for just over 6 years. Roof cables appear related to the latter A238 with redesigned roof, not the A207 up to around 2017, but check any you view if you're concerned. All cables on mine (a 2010) are A1. As Blobcat above, they are heavy cars at nearly 2 tonnes and suited to a powerful engine. Mine is V8 which is lovely but the petrol V6 is also a super engine. Diesels very good with great torque but yes, better suited for much higher miles and have plenty of complicated tech which can be unreliable. Find one with HK sound system and COMAND if you can and, airscarf and multi-contour seats. They are desirable options and if any see any with more options, then you're on to a winner. Stick with max 18" wheels if possible, bigger wheels will produce a choppier ride around town but really, it is a matter of personal choice. They are a great long distance tourer but back seats really suited to small adults or kids (or doggo's)! I wish you good searching, please let us know how you get on.
