Am looking for a 1960's 190SL at the moment. Seen a few for sale. What are the things to look out for?

I had an early 70s SL and I had to replace both front wings, not too expensive as pattern parts are available. I would check for rust in wings and chassis.

I would also make sure that I was able to start the engine from stone cold, preferably overnight and check for the dreaded blue smoke, as unless the valve stem seals have been changed they will be as hard as a brick, and let oil trickle down the valves overnight giving oil smoke when first started.

As with all collector cars the things that give the car value are condition, originality, history and provenance. And all cars of that era rust

I always thought that the rule was go for the best bodywork possible as the mechanicals are easier and cheaper to put right but I think with a 190SL I could be wrong.

Whats your budget? Me I would be looking at bodywork, interior and chromework, the oil bits I would deal with myself if required, but condition is everything as bodywork for 190 would be expensive and I wouldnt think there are any pattern parts available.
