I am looking for some help with my 1973 450sl which had the ignition coil and battery taken out. There is 3 wires (red, red w\white stripe, and a green w\black stripe)coming from the dash harness, two ballast resistors, and 4 wires(red, black, brown, and yellow w\green stripe)coming from a box under the fender well.
Can anybody out there school me how to wire all of this with a new coil?

Welcome to the forum, how you wire it in depends on the voltage of the new coil. If it is 12volt you do not need the ballast resistors. All I can say is that one the wires going to the coil with the ignition on, one wire will have 12 volts on it,that goes to the coil + the coil - goes to the distributor and you can forget the others. If you have an 8 volt ballast coil, then the ballast resistor is in series with the coil and the solenoid on the starter motor short out the ballast resistor putting 12 volts over the 8 volt coil for easier starting.

If you do not get this I can draw it out for you

What is the voltage of the coil that you have, 12v or 8v

It is a 12v coil. I have positive voltage coming out of the coil. When I run the distributor wire to the negitive, it becomes negetive voltage and no spark. Maybe a worn or bad distributor? The vehicle has over 170k miles.

That would be normal as the contact breaker (points) ground it when the engine stops with them closed.

You must have a 2,2mfd 500 volt working condenser wired to the neg terminal otherwise the spark will be too weak to run the engine.

Take off the distributor cap and rotate the engine so that the points open, you should then have 12v on the negative terminal of the coil

Wiring problem is no more, thanks to you and the Haynes manual.
New problem. Starts only for a moment, will not stay running even for a second or two.
