I used to do it. I read this thread, cleaned off my bolts and won't add copper grease again.

I personally apply a small amount to the threads. I have been given advice from lots of people whose opinions I value some pro and some against and have made my own mind up (not only on this forum). As most of the resistance is provided by the friction seat I personally don't see the problem with it.

It is similar to copper greasing brake pads, some brake engineers say it is not necesarry and other mechanics will always use it.

I have to agree about the threads,,some of mine get so tight you know that damage is being done to the bolt or the hub

just use common sense, 80% of friction is on mating surfaces, NOT the threads, the threads seize and cause mega removal problems.

have the optimum compromise, grease the threads and keep mating surfaces clean. this is what numbercruncher sort of accepted, IMHO, and so did the MB servicing quote. it's just choice, i am just trying to be helpfull and logical based on my experience. herbiemercman.

Yes when I first got my w203 and was removing the wheels for servicing, the creaking and groaning the wheel studs were making when removing them was rather worrying. All the threads were clean also. I think part of the problem is the rust etc that builds up on the thread that protrudes the rear of the hub.

I respect others decision to refrain from using copper grease but personally I shall continue to to do so.
