I really need advice as I am getting nowhere with Mercedes Dealerships.

I got a SLK 320 on a 2000 (X) plate in May 2005. On the 7th July 2005 a third party drove into the back on the car; he slipped off his clutch while we were in traffic. The accident caused some damage to the rear bumper which was repaired via a nominated repairer chosen by his insurance company.

However, a week after getting the car back from the body shop, the alternator just went. No warning, just stopped working. I was suspicious as the car has been regularly serviced by MB and was also checked prior to my purchase and wondered if there was any link to the accident. I was also advised that alternators going are not a common fault on MBs by a MB technician.

I got the alternator repaired and the day after picking the car up the interior light and central locking switch developed faults AND the alarm became very sensitive and kept going off on slightest contact with the car.

I took the car back to the garage and they determined that the fault was a blown relay and central locking switch. As you can imagine, I was very surprised as none of these faults existed before the accident or before the alternator problem was resolved.

Taking in account all of the above, is there the possibility that the original accident on the 7th July is the cause of these faults as before the accident, the car had been a dream to drive and was very reliable. If not, should I now expect a tirade of problems? Are these common faults with SLK 320s?

Yours, losing faith with my SLK very quickly, Del :-|

Comman fault with the SLK which gives faults with alarm/central locking and interior lights is that water leaks past the boot seal and damages the central locking pump (PSE PUMP). This is located in the o/s of the boot you can get to it if you take out the spare wheel. Its inside a foam casing. take the connectors of and if there is water damage the terminals will be corroded. if so you will need a new PSE pump, connector block, and repair looms all available from MB.
PS and a new boot seal.

Hi,
If you didn't have any problems before the accident, it is worth checking with your citizen advice bureau. They will be able to tell you what course to take if you think that the repair is not what it should be. I have had a SLK from new for nearly 3 years and never had any water leaking in the boot..
If you put a single sheet of newspaper around the boot seal and take it for a spin in the rain or hose the car down with a hose (without direct spraying on the boot), you should be able to detemine where the water is seeping in.
But if the repair is not up to the standard you would expect, gave the insurance company a dose of there own medecine: Take them to court!
