Hi, My new slk won't hold the battery charge for more than about 10 days when left unused. Starts well on jump leads but embrassing to be jump starting a new slk!! Dealer not very helpful. Any ideas? Have heard that this could be a problem with the "electronics" draining the battery and can occur on other models too. Any experience or tips??

When you say new,do you mean brand new, or new to you.

There is only two things, the battery or something draining it.

It is quite possible that the battery is faulty, don't get told otherwise, if new famous names can go faulty in the replacement market, well so can the new ones as they all come down the same production line.

Re something draining it, the only test one can do is to join an ammeter up in serries taking care that the circuit is not broken in the process and stopping the drain

there is no other way.

If the dealer refuses to fix it (in writing) then you have a perfect case to reject the car as not fit for purpose.

I would make the dealer aware you understand this and he should suddenly want to fix it.

Dave,

Does your new SLK have a mobile phone kit? I have heard that it is possible to get two wires the wrong way round, causing the kit to work properly but stay live when the ignition is off - causing the battery to discharge.

Regards,
Alan.

Thanks guys problems sorted hopefully!!! Tracker fitted by dumb technician who had incorrectly connected it across two permanent live feeds and so it was draining the battery. V apologetic technician...:)

So does Tracker only work when the engine is running?

How do you find the car if it's left somewhere (or carted off on a truck)?

As Rory's post it must be across a permernent live feed, the battery consumption of those things is almost nil.

reply to Rory,

If the car is moving without the ignition it alarms. Also, I'm told, has sensor on it so if it is lifted to be towed it alarms as well. So I am told...hopefully I never have to test it. I had it test tracked the other day and it was scary how accurately they could pinpoint me.
