I have a the new shape E270CDi auto and tow a caravan. On four occasions whilst towing the vehicle has lost power and gone into emergency mode. My dealer can find no reason for this and is unable to resolve the problem. Has anybody else experienced this problem?

When you say lost power and went into emergency mode, do you mean the engine or the brakes? I haven't had any problems with my brakes, although I haven't ever towed anything.

I did read in Auto Express about a reader who had similar problems which the dealer was unable to resolve and they asked if any other readers had had a problem and to get in touch with them.

It is the engine that loses power. I was travelling at 60mph when I suddenly lost engine power. The vehicle speed reduced to 20mph max. I had to pull over, put the gear lever into 'P' and wait for about 10 minutes. This happened again some 150 miles later. The first time this happened I was half way through an four mile long tunnel in Swizerland!

It cannot be the transmission oil overheating as I had only been travelling for 20 miles after a lengthy stop. When this happens there is no indication on the dashboard of any description that a fault had occured and the cars computer does not record it either.

Do you happen to still have that issue of Auto Express for the contact details?

Many thanks

loss power

Hi

If the vehicle has gone into emergency mode this will be recorded in the fault memory of at least one or more control units. If there are no fault codes then it sounds like the engine losing power for some reason - possible air flowmeter, inlet port shut of motor or fuel pressure regulator

I don't still have it sorry.

Off topic, but how do you find the E270CDi for towing? I would hope it would be very good with that amount or torque (well when its not in emergency mode).

Check fuel cap venting. Next time it happens, open the fuel cap. See if you get a very loud sucking noise. If there is a problem the fuel pump cannot suck diesel from the fuel tank resulting in loss of power. Most liekly to happen on long runs when you are heavily loaded and running at the highest fuel consumption.

I currently drive an E300TD estate Avantgarde, and find it a superb tow car. I recently changed my caravan, and when I towed my old van to the delaer, had a similar problem. Power dissapeared, thought the worse. If you have a 13pin electrical connector, you will probably find the problem is with the electrics to the caravan. My other symptoms. When I put the windscreen wiper on, the back wiper also ran. Took the car to the local repair man, I don't use MB, who found the fault was with the 13pin to 7 pin adaptor. Replaced it from local caravan shop £30, MB £150, no problems since. Hope this helps

No you should be gettings a 'Whoosh' as the tank has a positive pressure.
