Lost all power after Red Battery Light came on

Hi, I had to leave my 1994 C180 on the roadside last night after I lost all power. The radio display and headlights dimmed before I noticed the red battery dashboard light was dimly lit. Tried a jumpstart but as soon as I put it into D the engine died. Went back this morning and it started fine - drove back with no electrics on - just in case. Do I need to replace the battery or can anyone suggest what the problem might be. Thank you.

Sounds like a job for someone qualified, what's the 'reg' you refer to? Thanks for the response though, much appreciated.
