Hi My E320 coupe has been retired - I can't solve the high reving problem. (for sale £300)

Instead I have bought a very nice 94 e300D, although it's done 175k I bought it on condition and service history. It had been look after by a specialist called Andrea Mcdonad now MSB (I think) somewhere west or Wales Way) SPoke to him first (Lovely Chap)

This car is a dream Apart from .......

Slightly wining diff (not load not too worried)
And slight knocking over bumps from something on the front right.

Any ideas my friends ? ANy views I'm grateful for it all

It will be either the anti roll bar bushes or a front lower ball joint. If it is a ball joint get it sorted asap as they snap and cause a whole world of issues.

If it's knocking I suspect it'll be ARB bushes

The 606 engine is a weighty monster so I'd reckon on replacing the engine mounts unless they've been done recently. Have a gander at the front doughnut and the diff input seal as well

Nick,

As ever many thanks, and thanks for you help on my old e320 with the wiring problem.

I should have listened to you and that bloke in Hove you sent me to and stopped trying to polish a turd a long time ago.

Have you ever heard of Andrew Macdonald (Wrong spelling) the bloke/machanic who used to look after my 300D according to the log book?

Also is the 606 the best diesel w124 engine in your view?

I am quite pleased with this new one though, how long till it needs a head re-build? (The engines pulls very hard) 225k or more, whats you experince ?

What am I looking for on the diff seal mate ? I Thought the winging diff was just the noise of the Munich Taxi and they just slowly got lounder and lounder ! My firnd said he'd been in some really lound diff cars in Germany.

My car or engine don't shake when it turns on and off or running- Does that mean mounts are OK?

Thanks for your help buddy

As the above, but also at that mileage you may have to look at the shock absorbers.
Can't remember the last time I saw one leaking, but changed some on a 300te this week for sogginess & the car was transformed in terms of body control & noise.

Any pics of your coupe?

hi joe, i have a e300td and experienced the same knocking problem. my local garage changed the drop links this is a short bar with a rubber bush at each end connecting the ends of the antiroll bar to the suspension.this resolved the problem. there are also two rubber bushes on my car which secure the antiroll bar to the car's bodywork. i think this is my next job. best of luck. herbiemercman.

Do not forget that wheel bearing do fail and can make a whining sound.
Engine mounts can also fail throwing the drive train out of line, and you can see these from under the car.

The vent pipe should also be cleaned that sits on top of the diff. Some additives can improve the situation

The 124 front suspension is different than the 210 though. Nodrop links.

'Television', I've had the same knocking problem as described by Joe Paterson on my C250. I've bought some front bushes from my local dealer. I took the old ones off today and had a look. They're old, but I didn't know how to tell if they were worn (obviously I'm keen to cure the knocking noise & want to make sure I'm fishing in the right place). After comparing old & new though I did notice that the gap between the side ridges (the gap being the space where the curved clamp wraps around) is wider on the old bushes than the new. Is this an indication that perhaps the grooves on the original bushes have disappeared after the central rubber between them has worn down over time, and perhaps the bushes have effectively been sliding sideways under the clamp - is this what actually causes the knocking noise? Sorry if I'm not making myself clear, but I'm trying to describe it without the aid of a pic!

Many thanks

On the 202 you have less components with no drop links and the bar is held by the central bracket. I think that the rubbers are still the same as in the link. Once the bar starts sliding sideways then wear becomes more rapid

by levering quite hard with a jemmy bar, knocks should be picked up. There are also the bottom swivels and steering components that can make knocking sounds
