Hello!

Hoping for your thoughts regarding my 2013 c180 1.6 cgi please:

It's been having fluctuating coolant temperatures over the recent period. Car takes longer to reach operating temps ( approx 90 degrees). Temps fluctuate between 90 degrees and down to even 60 degrees after reaching operating temperature.

Previous similar issues last year- coolant pump replaced.

Taken to main dealer- can't find any faults, pressure tested coolant system- no leaks. I asked about thermostat and they said 'everything is working as it should'.

Advice is to 'see how things go' and they have 'made a note of it in their system'.

Not sure if relevant but I have a warranty on the car which runs out very soon (non-MB warranty)- trying to avoid warranty work by kicking issue down the road? Especially as seeing as its not an MB warranty anyway, even if they note the issue now, I assume they wouldn't cover the work if it turns out to be an issue out of warranty.

In my mechanically uneducated opinion, I struggle to accept that a 30 degree variance in the coolant temperature is within parameters of normal function, especially as this had not been happening previously. Maybe the cold weather, but still I feel the thermostat should be doing its job despite that.

However, should I take their word for it? I took this to the main dealer for their assumed very high expertise with MB products, and I assume they should be aware of MB's issues with coolant pumps and thermostats and how to diagnose them.

Welcome. In my opinion your dealer is talking nonsense. My CLK ran very cool when l first bought it, the specialist said all diesels run cool. I nevertheless had the stat changed and it runs correctly at about 87 degrees now plus economy and heating much better.

I had a similar issue with a 274 engined C Class. The first dealer cleared the codes and said no fault...twice. The second dealer changed the stat and fixed the fault. If yours is a 274 engine, the stat takes between 2 and 3 hours to change. Hence the reluctance to change it under warranty.. The stat on a 271 engine is easy to change.

I suspect you stat is faultu.

Dealer speaks with forked tongue.
If 8ts dropping below the normal operating temperature (at least 80 degrees) the thermostat is goosed.
